I have WHAT in my yard? :

OK Let's review:

'Their' means something which belongs to some one. "I like their chickens."
'They're' means they are as in "They are crazy about chickens."
'There' means a place. "My chickens are over there!"

I was in a class with an English teacher that used the wrong one.

I usually don't point out mistakes, but I didn't want to put my name on the project while it contained such an error.

I feel that a forum is less formal, so people don't need to be so accurate.

It bothers me, too. But I still get what they're saying. I may not hire someone with a bad case of grammer neglect, but I would sell them a chicken.

Have you ever been in a Chinese restaurant or nail salon and seen a handwritten sign? Same thing..language differences. I just automatically add the "s" to their words.

You should have seen the "note" my neice's writing teacher sent home the other day. It was appalling. Incomplete sentences, bad grammar, miss spellings!! Seriously?

The funniest thing about this post is that the grammar police ALSO have typos in THEIR posts.

I do agree with the grammar thing though... why not do our best to write clearly? It helps with communication. Good grammar does have an effect on how people come across.

By the way, I make typos and mistakes on here all the time.

Who am I to judge a person by how they speak or type? It does annoy me to see these errors.

Teach your children to spell. Step one.
Or would that be..Teach your children to care?

Sad, isn't it?

i bug my friends because i correct their grammar sometimes. i mean texting and stuff, sure go ahead and abreviate and stuff, but then there's sometimes when i'm just like no. you're wrong! yepp.

I usually let things slide, but sometimes it is necessary to really pay attention. If someone is posting in a chat type forum - like here - it's no big deal. If they don't use spacing or have outrageous run on sentences, I usually just don't bother reading it.

It's when I see the mistakes in places that people should know better - or care more to do better - like ads or notes home from teachers.

There was an ad on Craig's List "farm and garden" not too long ago where the man was selling "hores". I believe he had two beautiful, big bay "hores" for sale. Yes, he misspelled it EVERYTIME!

It's funny and sad all at the same time. I have seen help wanted ads for "professional" positions like accountants and lawyers where the ad has horrible typos in them. Why would you want to work for someone who can't even make an effort to be professional in their ads?

Maybe it's a personal prejudice, but I believe in that kind of setting, your typing/grammar are a direct reflection of your abilities. If you are that sloppy in your public posting, I would not hire you to do anything for me. I simply would not trust that person to do a thorough or professional job.

There are bigger things in the world to worry about and this topic has been beaten to death already.(many times over)
There are people here from all walks of life, maybe some actually were never taught "proper" writing or language skills due to their upbringing and extent of education.
Maybe in their line of work its not an issue either, as it may also not be an issue where they live as well.
While some of the grammar errors are from people typing too fast and not really putting alot of thought into typos, for many its really all they know and its hurtful and humiliating to have it shoved in their faces.
They may not be educated in grammar but they may also not be stupid and know they are being singled out here.
You do understand what they are typing, communication is really not being hindered, its just annoying to some apparently, but there is no harm being done.( unless you point it out for all the world to see)
Maybe we should have a written test before people are allowed to become members of this chicken forum.
If they don't pass, they are not allowed to come here and discuss the high falutin hobby of raising chickens.
Which is really, as we all know, only for the highly educated.
