Glad to meet you, Sarah! It's like being in a candy store, isn't it? This is what leads to chicken math, which is why everybody laughed at Sourland's comment and others like it. Chicken math is where you start out to get 4 chickens and end up with 16 or 24 or more!

Instead of worrying about potential broodiness, why not look at other characteristics that might matter to you. You might also think about your climate, if you live where it gets extreme. My favorite site that describes chicken breeds. That links you to an article about beginner breed recommendations, but it has a search button where you can then enter the breed you want to read about. What I like about this site is that it is standardized in the way it presents the description, and it focuses on the same key factors for each breed. They add in history of the breed, interesting facts, and pictures. (here is their listing for Marans). Or you can use their A-Z list, and browse.

We discuss breeds here, but I think the discussion gets so mired in matters of opinion and love that it's hard to sort out, especially for a newbie like us. Best wishes! I hope you enjoy choosing, because you will enjoy the birds you get!
