which breed is ideal????

I have six pet runners... They can be skittish, but if you're close with them and they bond to you, they are sweeties!

I have a White Campbell and a Runner...both extremely friendly, docile and stupid ducks.
The Campbell is 1 egg a day...everyday before 7am! Can't stop her laying.

They can both be a little skittish now and again when something, or someone, startles them...but on the whole they are fine, except when I am gardening or digging a hole as they very soon turn into annoying worm hunting ducks...GET OUT OF THE WAY!!! They haven't got any concept of physics and therefore don't know what happens when spade meets duck...fingers crossed they never will.

Personally I feel that it comes down to what kind of duck you like the look of...then lots of tlc, and treats, and within no time at all you'll have a friendly pet.

I can only speak of my Cayugas and WH. The Cayugas have hands down become my favorites (personality wise) due to their desire to gorge on slugs (and peas) which has made the VERY friendly. The two were fighting over who got to sit in my 5yr old son's lap last night.

I like Dutch Hookbills for their super-docile personalities; I think they make great, unique-looking pets. I have two Mallards that were the sweetest things until they turned about 6 months old and now they're really skittish around people, so I don't think they make the greatest pets...

I have a Call duck that's very bold around people, which is a good quality for a pet duck (but he's a stubborn, obstinate little thing

), plus Calls are just such cute, pocket-sized little ducks (and they come Mallard-colored, among many other color varieties, if that's what you're looking for)!

I have a "Jumbo Pekin" from McMurray hatchery too, and while she's not the friendliest duck in the world, she has more character and personality than any other duck in the flock, so I'd say Pekins make pretty good pets (and they can't fly, which is a definite plus!).

I have runners, rouens, cayugas, welsh harlequins, black swedish, pekins, golden hybrids, muscovies and buff geese. My favorite are my geese but with ducks the muscovies are the least skittish.

Thanks for all your responses so far!

So , so far the consensus is : Muscovy/Pekin/Cayugas? LOL. From what i can tell as far as silky ducks, i only came up with this farm's site that sells clutches of eggs to hatch but i am not a experienced egg hatcher lol ...i've never hatched a clutch ever, and am nervous that i would not do it right , not until i research for a bit......otherwise, I was considering Mallards/Pekins but between the two it seems Pekins are a better choice......I want a non skittish duck or mostly not at least....I just cant seem to find muscovies for sale! like as far as hatcheries go and such. I am in North california so that is more difficult as far as finding unique breeds of water fowl/Fowl in general except what can be ordered from hatcheries such as mcmurray and ideal......Any other suggestions?

The only breeds that appealed to me so far that the hatcheries do seem to have are: Pekins, Mallards, Maybe Cayugas......like mentioned I had a peking duckling before a pullet duckling....and she was so sweet lol.....i loved how she ate crackers out of my mouth and, just ran up on top of me at night in bed and just nuzzled in there....they are so darn cute
