which breed is the most broody?

Cornish and cochins, i have had alot os sucess with these breeds

Our cornish hen has been great with her 2 batches she has done. She with teach and nurture her chicks all the way through 4 months.

Buckeyes are generally very broody, and make great mothers!

A little disappointing how rare people bring up Araucanas, but, ohwell. Cochins and Silkies are only considered the most broody because they're commonly available, especially through hatcheries and 4H showers.


American Gamefowl, Araucanas, and just about any non-hatchery bred breed will go broody VERY frequently. This includes most heritage breeds, Langshans, Oriental Gamefowl (Shamos, Asils, Malays, etc) Ameraucanas, and so on.

My Araucanas would not go by a year without setting eggs at least once, at most, well, probably about 4 times if I let them. They're also very good moms, and even the roosters make excellent fathers.

Well,.. considering the raw number of broody girls in my barn right now, silkies definitely have 'broody' going on. They really get into it... I've got one that's been broody ON WIRE for almost a month. I think she will have to get 'slipped' a nearly done (with incubation) egg to break her. I have another pen where six went broody within a day and a half of each other- a bunch of naked, clucking, pissy hens.

Silkies, being not the most visually gifted bird as well as desperate mothers, will sit just about anything including rocks, clods of earth, even hardened poop.

In my experience the broodest hens are silkies and cochins.That is why I got rid of all of those breeds from my extensive flock.Never seen them come out and free-range because they would always be sitting on all of the other hens eggs.Plus there are so many silkie/cochin chicks one can sell or give away.
