hey everyone! This is our first time owning chickens and they are about 27 weeks old and 1 just laid the first egg the other day! Today I got the second egg with a day in between eggs. My question is, I'm not sure which breed laid this egg, we have 2 barnevelders, 2 Easter eggers, 2 Olive eggers, and a speckled Sussex who all look like they are ready to lay. Can anyone identify who this egg might have came from by the color? Thanks everyone, I know this is a silly question lol!

Well hopefully your easter eggers will lay blueish eggs and your olive eggers will lay greenish eggs. I think barnevelders and sussex lay brown, so you got me. If you feel like violating your chickens, there's a neat trick. If you look at the vent, a loose moist vent means they are laying. A smaller, drier vent means they aren't laying.

Barnevelders are said to lay a light brown egg. Easter eggers can lay a blue, green or brown egg. Olive eggers egg color will depend on the parents and will be olive colored if one of the parents is a blue egg layer and the other parent is a dark brown egg layer. If the olive egg layers were created by crossing chickens that already laid an olive egg, the resulting eggs could be anything from blue, green, olive or brown. Speckled Sussex can lay a cream, tan or brown egg.

My vote goes with the Sussex. My Light Sussex lays a cream coloured egg like that with a similar lovely sheen. It could possibly be an EE if they didn't inherit a blue egg laying gene, but the Sussex would be the most likely candidate.

Thanks for your help everyone! Figured out it is indeed Dot, our speckled Sussex who is laying! Can't wait for everyone else to finally join her!
