I want a duel propose Goose that lays a fair amount of eggs, has a fair amount of meat on it, goes broody and takes care of her goslings, free ranges and has good down feathers.

Thanks for replying.
Can you tell me more about the breed?
Do you have any?

I believe most breeds will set eggs and raise the young, I haven't actually heard of any that didn't.

The bigger the goose, the less eggs you'll get from my understanding. Geese in general don't lay a whole lot of eggs anyway. There area some that lay a fair amount, but they are the smaller breeds.

My Toulouse are great. We have a pair and now 3 of their babies! I believe though that they have a breeding season. They lay softball size eggs. They are huge! Sundown Waterfowl, could probably give you info, she raises and sell the eggs, she helped me alot when I was raising my babies.

Our female was very broody, she kept taking my wooden eggs out of my nesting box trying to hatch them too. She Is very protective and keeps a good eye on the goslings. She is very friendly to everyone people wise. they are a good choice for our family!

What about Embden or shetland or Pilgrim?
I really like Shetlands

Get the kind that catches your eye. They lay eggs seasonally, and are good parents.

Pilgrims are considered "small" geese. Toulouse, Africans, Embdens are "large".

I cannot imagine eating a goose any more than I could eat a cat or dog

so I can't speak to the best meat breeds

I assume they all have it though

I would think a good farm goose would be Americans, Pilgrims or Cotton Patch Geese, Americans being the biggest.
Chinese are Africans can be aggressive.
Toulouse big and cumbersome.
All geese have plenty of down.
Geese only lay eggs during the breeding season.
If you want waterfowl for eggs get Khaki Campbell Ducks. They are very heavy layers.
Go to the Feathersite and have fun checking out all the breeds of geese.
You will also find alot of links there.
I also have lots of links on my links page on my website and 2 article links from Mother Earth News on raising geese on the bottom of my White Sebastopol page.

I have been looking at feathersite lots and I think I like the Shetlands the most. does anyone have these?
