Which Breed would Be Best to Raise For Selling

check your local market.
look in the classifieds and such....see what is selling and what is not in there...maybe you could fill the market that seems empty?
Like tons of Buffs, then sell RIR. A little research helps so much.
If there are tons of meat birds in the ads, try a diff. breed of that bird, tons of layers, try a diff. breed.

I heard people say that there weren't many Buffs around and they wanted some.....well I checked the ads and sure enough, there was tons of chickens but not hardly any buffs. And those few were going for $10-15 each per ad.......so I raised 50 Buff hens and stuck only 25 in the paper for sale at $12 per bird. SOLD in one shot! Tony wanted to keep the other 25 to try as layers. But I hit cause I did a tad of research on what was wanted.

best of luck to you!

people do "say" what they want.....sometimes we can hit on it.

In all honesty I think it's going to be difficult to make money hatching and selling chicks. I'm not saying don't try, but once you factor in the cost of buying your breeders, the time it takes them to reach maturity and the feed they eat until that time, the expense of building the housing if it is not already built, and all the other costs involved in running a coop you might find it difficult to turn a profit.

I kept records of my flock this year and my flock pays about half of it's expenses. I also raise show birds so I can ask a higher price for the show quality birds. Mind you, I could probably do a bit better if I only sold chicks and didn't keep them until they were older.

If I were going to try it I would research heritage breeds as they are experiencing a surge in popularity. I find colorful birds also sell better than solid colored birds, and silkies always seem to be popular.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I've always been a fan of comb type for a specific area of the country...here, small combs are a must or you are dealing with frostbite all the time.

I always keep the chickens best interest in mind and like to provide breeds that do well locally....creating happy customers.
