Hey Danny,
sorry you got some single comb....it is still something we are working out of our flock. You must have got the bad box
Anytime someone orders chicks from us and they get a single comb we do offer a refund on those chicks or give you a credit on your next box. We do our best to ship some extra chicks so sometimes they cancel each other out. To us.....if it is a single comb, can't sell it as a Wyandotte and that is not what the customer ordered. the good news is we have hatched about 100 BLRWs so far in 2011 and we haven't had a single comb chick yet. We have been doing selective breeding the last few years to weed out the single comb carriers and our fertility is still going strong.
the bantam BLRWs are very cool by the way. There are people here on BYC that run auctions now and then for eggs.
As I said I am extremely pleased with your birds, I was under the impression from others on here that it supposedly increases fertility and can be a good thing, personally I culled all the single combs and all of the chicks that have hatched from my eggs so far have all been rose comb as far as I know. I may be ordering a second batch of chicks from you in March or April.
I was looking for you at the Ohio Nationals, I must have left as you and your husband arrived.
You all do an awesome job with Wyandotte's
I know.....and thanks for the kind words. There is a lot of controversy over the single comb issue, but we don't hatch any single comb chicks at all from our bantam Black Wyandottes or our standard Blues and Blacks and fertility has never been a problem. I think the confusion is the sperm is slower and doesn't stay alive as long as the single comb birds so sometimes you have to breed a lower rooster/hen ratio. Some birds can handle 12 or more hens just fine, but we dont usually go over 10 hens per rooster. If you decide to order more birds remind me and I will add 3 more to the box or discount you 3 chicks.
