For one, earrings come in different gauges. If you pierce your ear, or anything else, with a common sewing needle or pin, then the earring you choose to push through the hole will tear the skin. You risk infection that way. Also, the amount of scar tissue created will make any future attempts around the makeshift piercing site more painful than if you had simply paid a professional to pierce you.
