I hope your ground isn't too rocky.
It wouldn't be a big deal to dig that deep here... Our soil is clay and virtually rock free.

Mine is not and one of the reasons I went 18 inches

My coop is a walk in dirt floor deep composting. I used metal roof flashing on it instead of hardware cloth to keep rain runoff from getting in as well. Hardware cloth on the run, though

completely covered and in ground about 18 inches

I dug mine in that deep too. We have a lot of predators here, so I didn't want to take any chances.

You have a vertical apron, then? My duck coop has a horizontal apron that initially I weighted down with rocks until the grass grew through it. Now it's impenetrable

This is what I told him would happen! Idk why he doesn't want to just do it that way. There's some ditchweed he maybe doesn't want to pull out I guess!? Which I'm like, but where am I going to put their marigolds and fancy potted herb garden??? Lol
