I wonder if it's delayed notifications from old posts. Not sure how often the back end cleanup stuff runs but it's possible it could be things that got removed a while ago and the notifications are just going out (like a monthly job kind of thing.) I don't know that's the actual case, but if people are getting a ton of them in bulk, it's a possibility. (or they're all getting notices for the same posts because they replied to them)
