I've had a BO before and she was quiet. i have an EE now who is VERY quiet. i HAD another EE but she had to go cuz she was loud. i also just gave away 2 girls (an OE and a BCM) who were both very loud .....especially the OE (olive egger)!!!! amazing how loud she was! i am also illegal

i have done lots of research on this subject and have heard that Black Austrolorps are like "stealth chickens" and that they are VERY very quiet. if i get caught, i will go with i a flock of BO and BA. good luck!

My Black Australorp is very quiet aside from the egg song.
My RIR is quiet other than her begging and complaining when she isn't let out when she wants, nothing too loud or for too long.

There may be breeds that tend to be less noisy but I think it is more on how and where the birds are kept. If you have happy and content birds they tend to be less noisy, except when they sing their egg laying song or the cheerleaders.

My BO and EE's are all pretty quiet. My black silkie is the noisiest thing I have ever heard, so much noise from the smallest bird in the coop. Funny thing is she runs the place, none of the larger hens dare to stand up to her.

I'm not sure what "cheerleading" means. Is that making noise when someone else lays an egg? My Black Orpington is making so much noise right now and I don't know why she does it. Often times, she is in the dog pen and is (I think) calling the other chickens to join her. It sounds very similar to her egg song. They mostly seem to ignore her though. She's the only one who even sings an egg song, by the way. My Sussex, Australorp and Barred Rock are quiet as mice. Probably because they can't get a word in!!

That is cheerleading when a pullet or hen is in the nest box and another pullet or hen isn't but seems to be singing the egg song.

I think its pretty random. One of my black sex links is LOUD and the other only cackles if she's set off by the others. My Easter Eggers are quiet until.....they're not. My only quiet hen is our Barred Rock and with her its more that she's different.

Instead of

Bawk Bawk Bawk BAAAAWWAAAK! or Bock Bock Bokaaawww!

its more a...

Burr burr burr...... bur bur bur...

Not loud but if you have a coop near your bed room window its enough to annoy you and get you to let them out if you sleep in

My girls like to cluck, but that content cluck. They do squawk now and then but normally very docile, happy chicken talk. 2 Barred Rock, 2 Delawares, 2 Black Jersey Giants, and 5 Easter Eggers.

May I ask what breed those are in that picture?? The lighter one looks an awful lot like one of my hens that I'm thinking is a cherry egger.
