I am looking into buying some Turkey Poults, my question is: Which do you prefer to eat?

We ate our Tom last year...but are hens better, worse, equal?

Common Sense tells me that the hens are putting all the energy they eat into their reproductive system...not into the meat...unlike Toms who have nothing better to do but eat and look pretty.

The local hatchery, and many online are selling straighht run, and I am raising turkeys for friends...for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I wanted to make sure they get the meat they were expecting...

So toms or Hens?

Thanks
Laura

They taste the same to me. I dress a couple of toms each year and usually dress a hen for myself. The reason being that I don't need that much turkey on the table. So I guess if they just want turkey to feed to the family ,it depends on how much they think they will eat.

For "poundage" the toms out weigh the hens but... the toms are bigger boned.

The hens are just smaller because they are hens. If you want them to get really big feed them fast food, let them sit on the couch and watch Orpah and DR Phil all day.

Ok OK you can do the same thing with the toms but it requires ESPN, beer and chips.

Taste wise they are the same. The hatcheries sell straight run because they can't get rid of the unwanted toms like they do with the male chicks.
