If your birds are laying, there shouldn't be any blood feathers. It will go easier with two people, one to hold the bird, and the other to cut the feathers. Here is the paragraph from my duck book describing how it is done.

I have a white layer and welsh harlequin and they for sure can't fly. It would be pushing it if they made it 6 inches off the ground. So generally speaking they don't fly but there are always odd balls who do their own thing. My cayuga did manage to make it 2-3 feet off the ground when she flew out of the kiddie pool.All 4 of mine fly over a 6 foot plus fence, unfortunately. 1 White Layer, 2 Buffs, 1 Welsh Harlequin. Great layers, but I got them because supposedly they wouldn't be able to fly over a privacy fence. That was a lie.
