I was thinking the exact same thing Wifezilla. I've never met a duck that wasn't messy. But their mess is worth it.

I vote Welshies or Hybrid 300 Layers.. 300s are a Metzer Farms duck..hybrid Khaki with ????(He won't tell). Both are super friendly and beautiful so far for me.. Maybe get both.. Good Luck, Enjoy.

Being that we are new to ducks this year, I really can't tell you which would be the best fit... but I can tell you that ducks are not just plain ol' messy - they are 100% over the top messy. Water, feed mixed with water, and poo mixed with wet bedding gets Everywhere. They want to be clean, but it is very difficult keeping the brooder dry and give them what they need to thrive - which is lots of water. However, for as messy as they are, they are equally cute and delightful. We have 2 Pekins and 2 Khaki Campbells. Even though we don't get to hold them much, they Are nice and respectful to all humans. We absolutely love the ducks and enjoy watching them play in their little pond. Everyone gets a kick out of them and when my parents visit they sit out on the lawn and watch them play and waddle all around the yard. Ours really are not noisy, but I don't know if that is because we don't have any drakes or what. I really want to add two call ducks to the group next year. Best of success with your new additions when you get them!!! I know you will just love them.

Pekin ducks are the best breed of duck that I've ever raised. All my females have been broody also great egg layers. They may flap their wings while their in the pool but they have never flew away. My boys don't fight they know the eldest male and I are in charge. When playing out in their yard they can get a bit muddy and they can be pigs sometimes when I give them scraps from the table in terms of messyness.

All my ducks have been held since they were ducklings. If I sit on the bank they come up to me and sit by my side or they crawl right up into my lap if there isn't a bunny sitting there all ready. They let me hug them and carry them around the farm. I have school groups come out to the farm twice a year and all the ducks are petted by the kids. During the summer my eldest male and eldest female go to work with me at the local library. They walk around in their duckie diappers while I read to the 3 and 4 year olds that attend the summer reading program. After the activities for the day are done I have the kids sit in a circle and the ducks are in the middle. The kids love it!!!!!!!

From your list, I think the Buffs and Cambells are great layers, but do not go brody very often. I agree with MysticMom, the Welsh and Appleyards sound like the duck you are looking for. I just had a miserable hatch of Appleyards, or I should say Appleyard. So far, the week old duckling is sweet and cuddly. I think it will be even sweeter to us because we are its flock. I think I'll add to the numbers in the Spring. Good luck with your decision!

thanks all for the words of wisdom. I know when I was young, we had pekin ducks. they were sweet. But, this go around, I want a duck, that looks like a duck ( like mallards - wild looking- well, my hubby wants that syle

I do like the look of the welsh harlequin.
as for the hybrid 300, not sure if they have them here on Vancouver Island.

I do like mixed colors, so maybe we shall get a variety pack.
