Which girls are which?

"sure wish one of yall could have taken my fabulous Barr rock Roo. I gave him away thru "Tradio" which is a radio local program for buying and selling,etc.....
I saw where my beautiful 9 months old soon, Roo lives. wow its depressing.THREE large dogs he has to dodge, and a cat. No real coop. wish I would have checked them out first....I still wanna cry....I really wanted someone to take him to breed. He is or was such a spectacular specimen to behold....

If I have this right:

Currently 22 hens (multi ages or all one age?)

40 chicks = approximately 20 pullets, 20 roosters.

Say you replace half of your layers with pullets.

SOOO you would be butchering 20 roosters + 10 pullets + 10 layers = 40 birds to butcher....... which is a lot, think of 40 milk jugs, which are probably a bit bigger than a chicken, but do you have freezer room?

A good thing with dual purpose birds, you don't have to butcher them all at once, like you do with the meat birds.... so you could stagger it.

A rule of thumb that I TRY and do is have some chicks, some point of lay, some yearlings going on 2, some 2 going on 3...... and Butter, cause she simply is the best hen and has earned her spot.

It is a doable plan, but I find these chickens seldom go as planned.

Yes Mrs K that is about it. Like I said there will be cornish crosses during that time too. A friend of mine worked in a butcher shop in high school and had meat birds through grade school and high school and will be helping with the butchering. I agree completely with these **** addicting animals not doing what we plan for them either, too many times I've had to take a dog out on a leash in the morning because one decided to sleep outside the safety of the coop
