Which is the best commercial Breed?

RIR is pure and barred and plymouth rocks are the same breed.

I would agree that leghorns would be the best for egglaying.

Use of Chemicals???? You mean like truth serum or genetic enhancing?

No, improvement is done by breeding and record keeping. I am sure they have a formula of what particular hybrid is bred to what. Most of these lines took years of intense breeding by real experts.

From what they advertise ISA Browns are considered the premiere Brown egg layer in the world with 60% of the brown egg layers being ISA Browns.
I get mine from a hatchery in Michigan

I guess ill have to choose a couple different breeds and compare myself, thanks for the help guys.

hmm, after studying the gentics and breed selection with parent stock I have a better understanding now. If someone could just clarify this information for me...

1- Commercial Hybrids are produced through 2 different parent stock (pure breed stock with best genetics) to produce the higher productive bird.

2- If i hatch chicks from the Commercial Hybrids that I first bought for my business will be less productive than the Commercial hybrids.

3- Hybrid birds from top quality parent stock are more productive than using one of the top quality parent stock as layers.

Oh and the note - The breed is Plymouth Rock, some of the varieties are White, Barred, Partridge, Columbian, Blue, Black, Splash.

Same breed different colors...

Are these 5 pure breeds?

Leghorn
Rhode Island Reds
Light Sussex
Cuckoo Maran
Barred Rock

I had some "production reds" that were fantastic layers, they laid huge brown eggs for a couple of years and then production fell back quite a bit, just as Walkswithdog said. I hatched some of their eggs and the offspring was not quite as productive but they were ok. I had more eggs than I knew what to do with! I gave those birds away after a few years and now I am raising Barred Rocks for eggs... along with Buff Orpingtons, and some purebred Rhode Island Reds just because I LIKE them! I also am starting a flock of turkeys... "just cuz"... smiles.

ETA: Yes mooSa those are pure breeds as long as you get them from a good breeder, sometimes you can buy one thing and it might just not be what you thought you were buying, unfortunate but true. There are many great breeders on BYC!

Leghorns are going to be the best eggs layers in converting feed to egg ratio BUT Leghorns lay large WHITE eggs & not brown. You said you wanted a brown egg layer.
