Which is the rooster?

Yep, it helps to have the confidence to say no to an unhealthy bird.

One time I bought chickens from CL that were probably older than they said and in rough shape. I didn't have the will to say no after driving out all that way. They were fine but didn't lay well and I should have said no.
One time I met someone and their chicken had a deformed iris. Beautiful healthy birds with perfect feathering, alert, and no mites that were hiding some underdeveloped ocular Mareks. I said no, told them their whole flock was infected, went home, changed clothes and showered.

About six or seven other CL purchases of chickens have gone well. So all around the odds of getting a good bird aren't worse than getting a bad one.

Connecticut thread--I see several cockerels/roosters have been listed in the past two months.

You could also look in the threads for other states near you.

Yup! Learn about diseases, and then when you go to get birds, check them down. All of them, for mites, mareks, scaly leg mites, MG, sour and impacted crop...

I've had chickens for 8 years, coming up 9. I'm still learning.

BYC is a great place, and the people here are amazing, always willing to help others learn ;)
