My daughters are really wanting to know which chicken laid our first egg ... thus another question:

I've seen info here and there about this breed starting to lay at 19 weeks and this breed starts to lay at 23 weeks, etc.

Does anyone know where there is a source that tells most/all of the breeds and at what age they usually start to lay eggs?

Does anyone know at what age the following breeds start to lay eggs:

1) Australorps
2) RIR
3) Red Sex link
4) Hamburg

Chirpy- The Red Sex Link is the one probably laying first. Mine started laying at 16 week to 17 weeks. I have 4. Don't know about the rest, my guess would be RIR, Austro, than Hamburg.

I vote for the red sexlink too, mine layed early & only skipped one day till she was 15 months old. Now she lays almost everyday.

Yep red-sex link. The ultimate egg laying machine.

Kudos to everyone who voted Red Sex link. I caught her this morning giving us another beautiful brown egg. That's five eggs in her first seven days!!

Yup...was just going to agree with everyone else! I had one lay on Friday and the others today (or perhaps the one who laid Friday laid again today, in which case one has not laid yet!) They were 18 weeks old yesterday.

Just for future information I thought I'd update.

Our Red Sexlink was 17 1/2 weeks old when she laid our first egg.

Today, our approximately 20/21 week old RIR laid her first egg.
It was much smaller than the Red Sexlink's first egg but was laid much earlier than I had expected.

This getting eggs thing is fun!
