Personally, I think a Sussex, RIR, Wyandotte, or Salmon Faverolle are nice choices! But probably not a jersey Giant if you have small hens.

I've got 2, a RIR and white leghorn. Out of the 2 I like the Leghorn better. Could just be that he crows and the RIR hasn't started yet. Fog Horn is also the prettier chicken.

I vote brahma as well. I have 2 dark brahma hens and they are so mellow. If I ever got a rooster, I think it would be a brahma.

I have a HUGE soft spot for Speckled Sussex. I do not own any myself

But they are just breathtaking.

My standard Dark Brahma rooster is, was "the MAN" couldn't ask for better.

.he was a perfect pet... he would sit in your lap for hours he loved being petted and held, he would purr < yea purr> when you held and stroked his back.. he settled all arguments with his girls all 10 of them, he had them in the bed by 8:30 every-night, all I had to do was close the door, I lost him last week to the heat... with out him its like "hens gone wild" at spring break... their doing better now but for a while with out him it was chaos.

I have a barred rock roo who insists on sleeping in a tree not the roost, and he has not stepped up to the plate yet as flock rooster? I am defiantly getting another Dark Brahma roo soon. the one ill be getting is going to be about 10 weeks younger so we'll see how soon he grows into the flock patriarch position, soon I hope..

I also have a young standard Large Fowl gold barred Cochin roo. he is younger hes at 12 weeks now and is getting very rooster like he is gorgeous, but even though hes nice, he still doesn't have the temperament of the Dark Brahma's..

I wish I had taken pic each week to show how nice Lafiat was becoming...
