This may sound a bit silly to many of you but anyhow....

I have 2 ten month old roosters and they appear to be just one too many for the size of my flock and my garden. This means I need to sell 1 of them sooner or later (I wouldn't have the heart to cull them cause they've been with me since they were eggs). They are both happy, healthy and active. 1 of them, however, has this habit of flying up to the top of the fence and let all the neighborhood know who's boss - which I find very amusing. What I find less amusing in him, though, is that he's quite aggressive and never misses a chance to try to kick me in the shins when I approach him too close. (I can live with it, though, no blood has been shed on either side so far :) )The other rooster is much calmer, more appealing to the eye (my eyes, that is), but he doesn't perch on the fence.

Now my question is: if the dominant, more aggressive rooster has to go, will the other one take his place and start to perch and crow more? Or is it just their personality which does not change? Also, will he start attacking me as well?

I keep them as pets so it's not a question of how useful they are :)

Thanks for any ideas

I often do things like this, get loads of advice and then choose the other one ;) buts that just me. I'd probably keep the less agressive one especially if they're with other chickens. Although the other one sounds rather cute, and probably could keep foxes away for a tiny bit longer (I mean if the coop were broken into he would hopefully make enough noise to get you or keep the fox at bay/ distract him form other chickens if you have any)
They both sound he less aggresive one may be slightly more dominate but never to the level of the first.
I hope I helped :)

Thanks for your reply
Of course, every piece of advice is appreciated :)
Do you think the less aggressive rooster may take on the habit of perching and crowing?

Its possible but he may just not be interested in that. Could be the dominate rooster's person thing. Chickens have those quirks too. Personally I get rid of the aggressive rooster. They are the 1st thing that gets removed from my flock. If you do hatch any eggs he sires it can and will be carried to sons. Even if not w/o the less dominate rooster around he may turn even more aggressive to other things, hens people etc. A bad rooster is the LAST thing you want in your flock.

He might, I'm not sure though I've only ever had one rooster at a time. He will probably become a bit more dominant.
You could test by putting the aggressive one in a different section for a day or two and see if the other one starts

With a sweet rooster right on hand, it seems pretty silly to keep ole who attacks you. If he's already started, he may get worse trying to make you submit to him.

Is your sweet rooster crowing at all? I have 6 boys & they all crow. But I've heard that some dominant roosters don't let the subordinate ones crow. If that's the case, "sweetie" might get more vocal once the "stinker" is gone.

I understand about having a favorite, though. It's easy for me to say get rid of the mean one because I haven't raiised him. We've had to cull one guy that got too rough. For me it was deciding what kind of flock I want. I want family friendly, show the neighbors, play in the yard kind. Frannkie didn't want anyone coming near his girls. I out rank him, he went into the stew pot.

That's a lot of rambling. Hopefully it will help you.

No contest: Definitely get rid of the rooster that is attacking you

Of course you can't predict the actions of the other when he leaves.
Good luck!

That's quite a good point about the offspring, thanks. Since I'm not planning to intervene if any of the hens go broody, I certainly don't want him to pass on his aggressive genes
