I want to get geese this spring and wanted some opinions on the best breeds, Whats Good layers, Setters and etc. I really like the Emben, Toulouse, and definetly Sebastopols. But I was wondering if geese were any harder to raise then ducks? I really dont want to spend $50 on a baby then have it die from me doing something wrong.
Any info or tips welcome thanks!

I have two Embden geese and I believe that my goose does not set on her eggs as much as she should.
And I have not had them long enough to know how many eggs that she lays.
And I have not had ducks but my gander fights me so that is kind of hard to handle.
But I still love them.

Hope this helps!

I think Geese and ducks are both easy to raise. Geese might even be a little easier. Chinese are the best layers followed by American Gray.

Geese are FAR more seasonal layers than ducks. If you want eggs fr cooking then you are better off with a duck or chicken. Even the most prolific egglaying goose (which is the chinese according to "the Book of Geese" by Holderread) lays only 40-100 eggs a year. The second highest breeds product 20-40 eggs a year.

I have had my Buff Americans sit clutches before, but to maximize production incubating the eggs artificially is recommended. Again, this is based on information from Holderread's book, but others might have more information from first hand experience.
