White chicken took an intense dust bath. Will he be white again?

White is more of a curiosity than anything. My little chickens managed to get into a plant pot today. By the time I found them it was too late. My white chicken is now gray. Will he regain his lovely white coloring again without human intervention? He's my first white baby so I've no idea how they stay white!

For reference, this is him this afternoon and then this evening.

:gig I LOVE it! :D
If you want to hasten his return to "sparkling," give him some sand to dust bathe in ... and block off the flowerpot!

I found it freaking hilarious! You should have seen the speckled one dig. The pot was packed solid. Within five minutes he had a hole so deep his head was level with the white chicken's feet. The pot was being moved from my front porch to storage out back. I had to put it down to use the bathroom. When I came back... I closed my eyes and walked away. Luckily tomorrow is vacuum day.

After I got over the shock I laughed myself silly. They're serama chickens, so they're hilarious to begin with. I've been listening to him crow all day. It sounds like a squeaky horn.

Hah! This happened to my silkie right before she raised a 'cloud' of dust with a good shake. If you plan on showing this bird, you should check out the silkie grooming thread. It has some great ideas around keeping white feathers immaculate.

Luckily not! I got them specifically because they're hilarious looking. (I know, I know... Never get an animal for looks.) my cats love a good roll in the dirt. The dust cloud is scary intense. Especially when it's on your bed.

As long as he eventually returns to white he's cool to play in the dirt all he wants. I love the silver color he's developed from dirt, but he's supposed to be white. :p

Try silkies sometime - they're straight up aliens.

I've had several young ones. They're so clueless. Candelabra was the worst. If you put him on a shelf (that *every other chicken* can jump off of) he will stay there. Forever. His record was 26 hours. He had food and water luckily. But he wouldn't get down. His Brats would jump on his back and he would just sit there. Killian was the opposite. She's a jerk. She expects you to carry her everywhere. She won't get out of the coop unless you pick her up. And she screams until you do. Then when you put her out she goes back home ten minutes later. She was furious when she realized she was too big to get through the chicken wire. She liked to let herself out and smirk at the other chickens.

I've had tons of chickens of all genders and breeds. Nothing compares to the weirdness of silkies. It's like... They're a little "off" in the head? And they look so strange! In terms of looks I like them and Polish the best. But these new ones are coming up fast.

Luckily all my other chickens have been dark colored. Brown, gray, and black. I was blissfully unaware of the dirt they carried. This little dude, though...

My Buff Orps always amaze me with how filthy they get and how clean they end up when they finish. Maybe your little guy hasn’t fully got the hang of it yet.

It is hilarious watching them lay on their sides with a serious expression, then kick up a storm!
