White Egg

JJMR794 thank you. I had wondered what would happen. I have a button who lays eggs twice the size of others. They are monsterous. I wondered what would happen if they hatched so i threw them in. i thought maybe a huge chick. The chick was fairly normal in size but very fat. It was so fat it wobbled. It is only a few days old yet so I'm interested to see what will happen with it. I really hope it is healthy because I feel bad now. I honestly thought IF it hatched it would just be a large in size chick not fat.

Lemme Preface This With "in My Experience" And Add That I Only Get Them With Coturnix Eggs, Not Buttons Or Any Other Breed/ Speces----

The Odd "very Large Egg" Is Many Times A Double Yolk Egg--- Nature Would Have Intended It To Be Twins Just As With Any Other Animal... These Rarely Develope. If Thats The Case And You Have A Button That Should Have Been A Twin Then He Probably Absorbed Both Yolks--- Leading To Its Size And Rotundness

All In All It Sounds Rare To Me And Quite Cool!

I Have Set Many Double Yolk Eggs From The Coturnix I Have But None Have Developed To Hatch

An all-white egg is usually caused by the bird laying the egg too early. The spots and other colorations on the shell are 'put on' right before the egg is layed (if you've ever picked up a just-laid-egg, you know the spots will come off on your hands!). It is normal, especially for this time of year. I've gotten quite a few all-white eggs lately, from birds that are still inside the house.

Here's a couple of picts of the odd eggs and fat chicks that hatched from the huge one.....

There is the picture of the cracked open egg next to the normal sized egg
The fat chick and a normal chick next to eachother hatched the same clutch
Then some button pictures of eggs that left the oviduct too early and didn't get their dark coloring... They didn't hatch but are buttons not coturnix.

Wow ... that IS a huge chick.
Is he still doing alright?

It's doing fine. He is not wobbling fat and has trimmed up a bit. He is still larger than the other that hatched the same time..... well for that matter he's larger than the ones who hatched a week before him : ) I just hope he's healthy. I worry about hatching flawed eggs usually but big ones I just thought big chicks.

I would think that the pure white ones are going to have less protective covering and more prone to things like bateria...etc. Sounds like there is a mix of some hatching and others not. probably has something to do with the individual birds too???? Interesting none the less!
