White Giants from Sand Hill Preservation

Quote:
Their brochure says that we are breeding towards the APA standard.

I don't know, I just know that these are good White Rocks.

And they also emailed me in response about their "Ameraucanas," with absolute assurance that they're purebred, despite all my evidence that they were not. Hatcheries do that.

Take Murray McMurray for example - They give their customers little papers of guarantee that their birds are purebred and can be shown. It's really sad, because people believe them. I've gotten plenty crosses and extremely poor quality birds from them, and I'm not just talking about Easter Eggers.

I love going to poultry shows but I dont show poultry. I have always liked the very large chicken breeds as in Jersey Giants, Brahmas and Langshans. I will be very happy with the White Giants that I get from Cackle Hatchery if they are just of a very large size. If anyone has any information on White Giants from Cackle Hatchery good or bad please post it.

I have 7 White Giants from Sand Hill - 2 cockerels and 5 pullets. Other than they keep getting their tails plucked out by the older birds, they are looking pretty good so far. They were a mid-June hatch and were sent as substitutions for the Delawares I had ordered. I have had 3 batches of chicks from them (only ordered 2, but that is a long story), and I have gotten rid of most of them. I am keeping the Black Minorca pair I have left from them and some various pullets. Some of the BBS Orps I have gotten are shaping up pretty good too that were in the same hatch as the Giants. I also got some Black Giants as subs as well, and the Whites are a much better looking bird than the Blacks. I have had some real doozies from Sand Hill that were not what they sent them as, some obvious crossbreeds and some just different breeds than what was marked on the shipping list. They do get birds from some decent breeders, but their flock management has something to be desired. All in all, I think it is a hit and miss situation.

I can also note, the other bird (lost a few) I got from SH that is looking pretty decent is a Buckeye pullet. She is good sized and so far seems to have a pretty decent conformation. She is not at POL yet, so we will see how she turns out when mature.

I will not get into an argument over hatcheries again. I'll just say that I am happy with what I have gotten form Cackle. I have had little experience with Murray McMurray.

We have two White Giants from Murray McMurray this season. I'll post pics soon.
Just a little back yard fun. They are very nice birds. Big and sweet.
