Hi!

1) What type of bird, age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) She's a White Leghorn pullet, about five months old, seems about the same size as her sister. She actually feels kind of heavy for a Leghorn.
2) What is the behavior, exactly. Her comb is often bleeding or scabbed over, not like typical peck marks, just a big wound on the side. This has happened a couple of times - it always seems to have fresh blood. In addition, it now looks white instead of red where the scar tissue is.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? Several weeks.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No, which seems odd - it seems like my other two Leghorns (one pullet, one cockerel) would also be having problems.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. Bleeding.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. Frostbite? Other chickens picking at red? Dry skin? Over-zealous roosters?
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. Normal
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Haven't been paying much attention to droppings, but she pooped a big watery one on the porch while we were trying to get a picture.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Petroleum jelly about three times in the last week.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? Just trying to figure out what's wrong so I can treat it.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. Sorry, it's kind of blurry.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use. Coop and large run, pine shavings and pellets in the coop, dirt run with trees. There are twenty-eight chickens - twenty-six hens and pullets of various breeds, sizes, and ages, and two cockerels.

Thanks!

It looks like pecking or injury. Have you spent some time with her to see if she is low in pecking order or being picked on? The red wounds can attract pecking. Is she scratching herself or maybe running into fencing when being chased to make it bleed?

Thanks for your reply!

I watch the chickens every morning to see how they're doing, and I haven't seen any signs that she is being bullied. She's one of the younger chickens, but she definitely isn't the smallest. It does seem possible that it just keeps scabbing and getting pecked open. The petroleum jelly seems to be helping, so maybe the wounds originated with dryness? Should I just keep doing the petroleum jelly or try antibiotic cream?
