Hmmm, yeah, you can check lighting issues off your list. I am bad at troubleshooting these types of things. . And that hen is actually a Speckled Sussex! Your hen sounds like she was a real sweetie! I bet you miss her. Good luck figuring out what's up!

I'll see if I can let them out more but they get about 3 hrs every morning, 1 hour at lunchtime and 2.5 hrs in the evening free ranging during week and about 10-14 hrs at the weekend.
Maybe she is freaked by the change in rights on weekdays and weekends and we just need to be more consistent.

There are a lot of magpies and crows around and I do see eggy (little bantum) doing these little evasive sidestep movements in the garden when she is in open spaces and she hears / sees any large birds. Spring time here so more bird activity in the garden now.

I am looking at adding an extra run to their coop to double their space to 18sqm so they have more secure space to move around during the days.

That's almost 6 hours a day on the weekdays. That seems pretty reasonable. I am thinking along the lines of the store person who just suggested being patient. She sounds healthy and seems to have all her needs met. I bet it is just her young age and the breed is known to be flighty and can stress easily.

Expanding your coop sounds fun and exciting. I am hoping to do something similar next spring, perhaps. Have fun making your plans!
