White Leghorns: The Default Chicken

Gotta say that I wasn't 100% sure about getting Leghorns. But so far, I'm loving them! There only a couple of weeks old, but they have SO much personality already! One (Cayenne) is living up to its name. Feisty! The other (Saffron) is mellow and friendly. They are very active - probably the most active chicks I've brooded yet - and fun to watch.

Can't wait to see how they turn out!

I’ve raised 100s of chickens of many breeds but Leghorns will also be one of my favorites!! Prepare for some huge white eggs.

I have a mixed flock. Until I picked up these two, the only breeds I have more than 1 of are Silkies and Orpingtons, but even they are different colors: black and splash, and buff and lavender, respectively.

When I brought these two home, my hubby was like, "But they're the same!" And my son called them "ubiquitous" and dubbed white Leghorns as "the default chicken."

But I only have 1 white layer, currently: a Spitz. And I have 5 pullets on order that lay colored/tinted eggs coming in May. Should make for nice variety of eggs!

That said, I'm starting to wonder if Cayenne is a cockerel. I know females develop bombs early, but Cayenne's is noticeably bigger than Saffron's.

I guess I'll know for sure in a couple of weeks!

Here's Cayenne now:

He was developing into a really good roster, but I was noticing some concerning behavior from my alpha rooster, so Cayenne went to a new hone this week. He is living his best life with a flock of his own!

She's laying daily! I think she's become a bit of a loner without Cayenne, but she's doing well otherwise. Such a pretty girl with a huge floppy comb. I'll get pics in a bit. I'm up to my eyeballs in work...
