White Orp, Buff Orpington and Araucana pics (meet some of my boys!)

Cynthia or Jody,
My White Cochins bantam roos spurs have done a complete circle and are about 1mm away from growing INTO the leg. Do you know How I fix that? I think there beautiful i would hate to cut them, and I don't know how to remove them if i had to.

Mark, that is great that you got some hens. Isn't that funny you got a tail on a white and I don't have a single tailed white araucana bird here. lol Just goes to show you never know what will come out of those eggs. I'm glad you like her though.

Mark, I only had one roo get spurs like that and by the time they got that big, he broke them off himself. I'm sure they got caught on something and he tugged and off they came. I have never tried to remove any, so wouldn't have any helpful advice there. I've heard people say they just twist them off. I wonder if you could just snip them back about halfway. I know the fleshy part only comes out about an inch from the leg, so as long as you stay in front of that it shouldn't bleed. Maybe someone else will know for sure.

Haha that is funny, I like her the best, though my grandfather likes the blacks because they have tufts,so hopefully we can breed them if the black one from this hatch is a male.

Saw at one show bantam wyandottes with spurs so long they were rubbing up against their other leg while walking. The judges were appalled. They told me to remove a spur cut a piece of potato (1/2, 1/3 I guess) and stick it on the spur. Leave it on for several minutes, then twist and it should come off with minimal bleeding. I was told enzymes in the potato make spur removal easier. I haven't had to try it myself, but I am certain I will at some point.

The NPIP guy came today, and he did it for me, it was very easy just like the video! I just felt bad for the rooster lol. He said it shouldn't hurt to much because its a defense mechanism, if he ever got stuck on a tree branch or a predator grasped his spur, or he couldnt mate, it would brake off to help him reproduce or flee for the time being.
