Well not covered, but crests and some backs are stained black from gathering under our truck that was leaking oil. Truck is fixed now but my white silkies look pitiful. I thought of Dawn because of the oil spill ads showing ducks but I'm worried about my silkies eyes. I would be devastated if that soap stung their eyes. Any advice?

I'm thinking Dawn is going to be the best. Just be careful to keep it away from their eyes and you should be fine :)

Well that's the problem..the crest is the top of head. It will get in their eyes. I'm getting conflicting google results with Dawn. Some say sting, some say no sting. :/

I would think if Dawn does work, then which would you rather have? A chicken whose eyes are sore for a day or one that wasn't washed & might ingest the motor oil?

What about no-tear dog shampoos or do they not get the job done for feathers? (never bathed a silky before)

I was thinking Dawn because it's used to clean up most animals, including birds, after oil spills, and it should cut right through the motor oil. It might sting a little, but if you have a saline solution around for contact lenses and othe similar things, just rinse their eyes out after. Quailsong is right, you're much better off stinging their eyes a little than leaving in on there for them to ingest. Plus, if you do leave it on, what happens if IT gets into their eyes? Not good.

I agree with the above answers. You could always test the soap out to see if it stings your eyes! ;) (I'm just teasing)

I exaggerated this thread to get the most educated, experienced replies. This happened a few months ago and the leak was fixed asap. My white silkies have black stained crests but no ill effects. About Dawn. Guess I'll take PoultryGirly's advice and try it my eyes first. :p
Thanks Pyx and Quail.
