Whitewashing?

Alright, I jsut loooked at the Tranisional Traditions blog on Grit and they whitewashed their barn with "barn lime". I thought that was what I have. What gives?

"Barn lime" is a vague generic term.
True "whitewash" requires Calcium Hydroxide

It's a chemical recipe
If you use the wrong ingredients, it won't harden properly
Also keep in mind that it will flake off over time and require frequent reapplications​

We used Ag lime and it would stick.
The old timers said to use sea water and it would stick better and they were right but that isn't possible for you.
Some people put in some dry cement mix as well which I guess contains hydrated lime and it does make it stick better as well.
I have read on here that people do put in DE but I think the lime would do the same thing.

Consistancy should be thicker than milk, about that of a thin cake batter. Messy job

I was so hoping to not have to go to Lowes to get something else. I lucked out getting the main color and trim color off the mistinted cart. They don't sell white on that one

. I guess I can try mixing some up on a spare board to try it. I like the non paint-ness of the lime whitewash. I don't mind haveing to repaint every year or so.

Yeah, its not done yet, so I haven't put them up yet. You can find a picture onthe tartergate website. Just DONT use them for plans, because they are not and it will drive you crazy!!!!
