Who else feels guilty?

Throw a handful of their normal feed

Agreed. I throw out a handful of their pellets on the ground. For some reason it tastes much better on the ground than it does in the feeder.

My girls are just the same!

I am exactly the same way, especially in this cold cold weather - I feel like if I'm going out there I OWE them a little snack to warm them up. But it's all healthy: lots of kale and apple. And their eggs are regular - pretty much one a day per hen - with very strong shells, so they must be doing OK!

No, lol. It's cause they get treats EVERYDAY. Today was leftover noodles and spaghetti sauce.

I feed them so many treats because my 5 get a cupful of 2 inch feeder roaches everyday, making plenty of room for lower protein snacks like leftover veggies and carbohydrates. Despite the shorter day length, and upcoming molts, I'm still getting a pretty decent amount of eggs!

Ugh! Raising roaches for feed! Makes my skin crawl! I totally understand, but I can't imagine myself doing it. Yuck!

I don't by any means put anyone down for doing it. My sister keeps mealworms for her lizard. I just find it yucky.

Haha, if it weren't for my reptiles, I would feel the same. I just think of them as big rollie pollies. They can't climb anything smooth and walk pretty slow. But they still make great tools to get revenge on your sister.

I swear I've gone outside and the darned girls looked so SAD that I didn't have anything that I've turned right back around, grabbed some of their treat bucket and thrown it out - I am a wimp to my chickens!!

I am SO glad I am not the only one who feels like this. I go out to let the girls out and do throw corn on the ground and some inside so that they have something to peck for. Heard corn was something that helps keep their body temp up there. I also buy cheap loaves of bread and will give them bits of that for a treat later in the day AFTER they have laid their eggs. I also will throw oatmeal on the ground (Raw not cooked) and they love that as well. I feel like they have to have something special since they are out there in the cold all the time.
