Who else had their chicks BEFORE they built their coop?

Bought my seven chicks a month ago. Started them out in a 10 gal aquarium, but now they're currently in a very large box/brooder. I'm still working on the tractor. It's about 90% complete. I had hoped to have it completed this weekend, but darned if it isn't snowing right now, so it looks like it won't be finished until next week.

I bought an incubator and some eggs before I even thought about a coop. Once the chicks hatched I got serious about a coop and it was the chicks growing that motivated me to get the coop started and finished.

I am sooooo glad I am not the only one!!!!!! Got chicks in early Feb (6 wks old), trees down last weekend, 4 new chicks arrived mid-week . . . .

They are going in the hay shed tomorrow!!!!

I got my chicks last year in May and didn't finish my coop and run until July. They were starting to get mighty big by then. I had heard they could start laying at 15 weeks and I was panicking and working on my coop/run everyday after work. You know you're outside too much when you can sense the sun setting earlier each day. It's certainly doable beginning and completing a coop project even after getting chicks, just probably a bit more stressful (unless you're a pro builder which I'm not).

We received our 16 chicks on March 8. Between the weather and the weekends that I work, I'm very behind on the coop project. I was able to get the lumber last week Saturday and then another trip on Monday. It's all sitting in the garage just waiting to become a coop, but winter has returned this weekend, so I'm not sure when I'll be able to start. Hopefully soon. I did take a couple days vacation next month on one of my weekends off so I'll have four days straight to work on it then, if the weather improves.

Well, I knew I had some time to get the coop built but we had a warm spell and then it went back to normal cold weather. Acton, CA.

The guy we got them from said they don't need much and he's right, they don't. But I gave them one of the portable dog kennels and a very large run 30x30. That was almost two months ago, they were 10 weeks old when we got them (I think?) and I knew a coop had to be made soon enough.

I should have it done by tomorrow if all goes well and I'm not expecting it to. Rain or horseback riding or?

We were prepared for the stage they were at when we got them but it has been a learning process.

We got the birds in October, still no coop. I built a PVC/chain link tractor within a couple of weeks. We have a massive tarp that covers the entire thing as needed. We keep it covered at night. Uncover it during the day partially or fully, as the weather allows. This photo was taken before I put in the roosts and the nest boxes. I replaced one end with a piece of plywood wich allowed me to build the nest boxes outside the tractor.

Hubby swears he read that you should not have chicks before the coop, PFFttttttt, getting all reasonable on me. The time for chicks is NOW! As it is I'll not have any eggs til at least August!
