Who else is getting chicks tomorrow at TSC??

I went to my locally-owned feed store on Friday and got Welsummers, Speckled Sussex, and a RIR. Those were to go with my Black Copper Marans chicks that are the same age. Plus two Barred Rocks for my girlfriend.

Sooooo, today I was on my way home from the grocery store and I have to drive right by a Del's Farm Supply (owned by TSC). Wouldn't you know, I had to pull in and see if they had anything I "needed".

Thank goodness, they didn't. Only some BRs (already have), Cornish X's (don't raise meaties), and some turkeys (DH would kill me if I brought home something that needed another coop/pen built).

Whew, close call.

Questions arent stupid (only stupid NOT to ask them!). I have dual purpose breeds (br & bo). I don't raise them for meat, but plan on hatching out some if I ever get one in a broody kind of mood...anyway, I am going to try my hand at butchering some of my older birds (at least 1 fairly soon). I plan on following the normal processing procedure, along with marinating & putting her in the crock pot to see if that helps make it a little more tender. I'll let ya'll know how it turns out.

I made a post for this question too..I didnt expect to get an answer here b'cuz it was so OT of the OP's post..lol...

we'll see what they say :)

Your questions were not stupid, as someone else said above, Use a pressure cooker on the old ones. If you buy chicks that turn out to be roosters, you can butcher them by six months or even less for the table. TSC here had Cornish Rock chicks, which are a meat chicken that grow really fast and can be butcher really young, like two mouths I'm thinking. Supposed to be superior eating.

When I saw them I thought real hard about buying a dozen or so, but DW doesn't like butchering, and I'd need a separate coop just for that flock, so I passed on them.

If it was only a couple, I wouldn't worry about it, but meat birds, to my understanding, require a different diet than your layers. Not sure about where a person would get that unless it is like the DuMor grower-finisher feed at TSC. Something about protein. I use starter grower first, then grower-finisher and finally layer for all my chickens. Of course roosters intend for eating, get butchered 3-4 months of age as any longer and they aren't as tender.

Went to my TSC tonight thinking I'd sneak home a few mille fleur bantams, which might be in the bantam assortment, but they weren't in yet. I think the person who told me they'd be in on the 28th, meant they'd be shipping on the 28th. I should know better that chicks don't ship on Sunday! Oh, but common sense was trampled by 'anticipation'..... sigh.... my sin hath made me a FOOL! So I went ahead and bought chick food for $3 more than it usually is........

We went to the Clarksburg WV TSC and they had a surprising assortment. They had a bin with assorted "red pullets", (the list mentioned NHR, RIR, Golden Comets, Red Sex Links and production reds.) a bin with black layers (black sex links), a bin with Cornish rocks and EEs (cute little chipmunks listed as Americanas) and a bin of ducklings.

We came home with six of the EE's and 3 of the "reds". All are doing great so far, although they looked seriously dwarfed in the 2x4 ft wooden brooder we built to house the 35+ chicks we are expecting in April.

Best wishes to all you who also brought home new fuzzy butts!!

It's Day Two and my TSC fuzzy butts are doing great!
I got up early this morning to check on them.
They were all chirping and running around the brooder.
Then they eventually all crash at the same time and take their catnap.
Then one starts chirping and they all awaken and start running around eating and drinking and chasing.
And the whole cycle repeats itself.
