Who else is getting chicks tomorrow at TSC??

The basics I have read to be the best egg layers (and frmo research I ended up getting these)

Rhode Island Reds
Barred Rocks
Red Sexlinks
Black Australorp

I have heard others say:

Buff orpingtons
Califonia white
leghorns (?)

and a few others I can't remember..

Are these common breeds that TSC or Orschelns gets in?

TSC:

usually have the reds..

and some have found barred rock & buff orpingtons there too..
Mine also have a gold campine; but its only a fair egg layer; they said 2-3 a wk..

I was at Orschelns this evening to get rabbit feed and saw six tubs/cages of chicks but was in a hurry so I didnt get a chance to investigate. I am going to TSC tomorrow to see what they have as well. About how many chickens will fit comfortably in my 8 foot by 16 foot coop? I have a room inside the house set up for chicks for now since it is still to cold for them outside in this part of Indiana.

I have always raised White Leghorns because my kids were silly about eating brown eggs. They always gave me an egg a day. That's why I was so excited to find out that these tetratints that have created so much clammor are supposed to be an equal if not better producer.

As far as spacing, I think the general rule is one box for every 4 hens (I still give mine a box per bird) and a minimum of 2 square feet per bird (I try for 10 sq ft.) for a run.

I visited two TSCs today. one did have rabbits, but I had orders not to get them or ducks. I did have permission to get chicks if I wanted them, big surprise,

Anyway, neither store had and EEs or Ameraucanas is what they call common EEs. Both had bins marked pullets, and some st run as well. Fun to look until I either find what I want or break down and order some.

BTW--If you want egg layers; get the pullets..(females) DONT get them out of the straight run bin..thats just a mix and mostly roos...

Wild Trapper, A friend of mine ust called and said his dad said that the TSC in Eaton, Ohio had chicks out......dont know if your in the area but if close by call and see what they have. I will be calling them in the morn before I head over. well after I am done here in Richmond, lol
