Who else is getting chicks tomorrow at TSC??

Hello All!!
First time chicken owners here in my family. My husband, 2 sons - 1 teen - 1 tween and myself. We have 1 black lab, 1 Pekingese, 1 Tabby cat, 1 lop earred bunny, 8 pirrahnas, 1 oscar, 2 pike ciclids.

Yesterday we went to Tractor Supply (actually 2 of them because we wanted variety). We now have (1) light New Hampshire Red, (1) dark New Hampshire Red, (1) Black Sexlink, (1) Tetra White....all pullets ...4 total

They are soooo cute. For brooder box, We have a large card board box, newspaper, wood chips, 250 watt red lamp hanging from guitar stand, water feeder, food feeder and we are using an extra wire rack shelf from our kitchen oven for the lid....works perfectly. Its over lapping and it cannot be knocked over or off easily. We have this in our family room right now as it is too cold outdoors. We are studying Coops to build.

I love this website!!! Thank you to all who contribute.

Anyone have their flocks mingle with other pets...dogs/cats?

I would love to hear feedback from the experienced about my chickens and the dog/cat mingling.

welcome to BYC !
Dogs and cats think chickens taste good...

I have heard of quite a few "good dogs" that spent a lot of time "protecting" the chickens, then wound up killing the entire flock....
dogs are not to be left alone with the flock if you ask me.

have fun with your new little ones, and keep them safe. they are waaaaaay on the bottom of the food chain

First time for us - we picked up 6 Buff Orpingtons on Monday. My son (who is autistic) has had a great time watching them in the brooder (um, yeah, they're in the living room) and holding them. Planning on this to be a learning experience for him and to teach him some more responsibility in taking care of them. Plus he just likes any animal he can be around <G>

Ok guys. I need help.

I lost another chick this evening (this makes #2). It was part of the black orphingtons that I picked up at TSC yesterday. Now, ALL of them are scratching. I don't remember my first bunch (this was a few years ago) scratching like this. They are all getting new feathers so could this be it? I'm kind of panicking since I've now lost 2. I've NEVER lost chicks before.

I checked them and I'm not finding any evidence of bugs. One of the blacks has a bare spot on the right shoulder and it looks like it might be a little puffy. Any ideas? Suggestions?
