2tx- you should candle at least once - you know you want toooooooo. (said in my best taunting voice)

Well since I'm not working I will come babysit your little ones while you go see your son off

I wish I could - I need a vacation from this remodel. Somewhere with a kitchen sink would be good.

That is hard to send your child off to Iraq, my hubby was gone over there for 16 months. It changed him and my children view the world a different way now.

Good Luck to him

All kidding aside.....how are you going to know if you have an egg about to explode if you do not candle at some point or open the incubator?

My daughter did not appreciate being a sniff tester....

so now I candle...

Speaking of candleing - I just went and did my eggs. They are on day 3 and of the small eggs I have 6/9 developing. I can't tell on the large brown eggs yet. But it doesn't look promising at this point. I will leave them alone for another week now.

I promise

I always found that most eggs that have gone bad stink or weep. Usually you can smell that there's a baddie several days (well I smelled one for a couple of days before I culled it).

I've tried a total of 23 peafowl eggs this year. (The last 4 are due in about 3 weeks.) So far, half were infertile, 5 were old eggs, one I lost due to a power outtage, one has a bloodring, others just didn't develop. That leaves me with one possible chick in a few weeks. It better be a pretty one... peafowl eggs cost $8 to $10 dollars per egg. (Plus s/h)
DH told me he doesn't want to know how much $$ went toward eggs. I am forbidden to discuss it with him!

I agree, but 2txmedics is not opening her bator.

I would worry that by the time you smell it from a closed incubator it would be too late. The stinky one I had exploded luckily over the sink.

I get to worry about everyone else's eggs along with mine, ??

The nasty one I showed a pic of.... couldn't really smell it 'till I took it out of the 'bator and really, really sniffed. But it had doubled the amount of nasty grey floaters overnight. I'm guessing in a couple more days it would have blown.
I really don't see a problem with opening the 'bator to candle once in a while. The hen gets off the eggs daily to eat & drink, right? So if I open the 'bator a couple times during incubation, it won't hurt... actually adds fresh air!

2tx. I am beggining to think i may have to candles again after reading all this abouit exploding eggs. never had it happen and dont want the mess.maybe i should try the smell test first.LoL
Tuesday I will take the chance and candle..

Iam sending good wishes to your son
