Who else is waiting for that first egg?

Quote: Yep, my leghorn lays white eggs. So far, she is the only one laying (most days it's been an egg a day, had a 5 day gap, and now she's laying again). My black cochins, buff orpington, and golden sex links are all slackers

My buff did get into the nesting boxes I made yesterday but she seemed a lot more interested in knocking the straw around to dig for bugs (she didn't create anything even close to a nest), and she's laid in it briefly. My black cochins act semi-interested, but not enough to stay in them. My rooster who obviously won't be laying eggs acted more interested in the boxes than the sex links lol. I'm trying to be patient, but dag, come on girls, get to work

Still waiting for that first egg from my Buff Orpington and Barred Plymouth Rocks. Their combs and wattles are swelling up pretty big now so they should be laying fairly soon.

Never meant to make anybody jealous.  Once they start laying you'll have more eggs than you know what to do with! Yesterday I got seven out of eight hens!

Ha ha ha! It is so normal to brag about the excitements on eggs. My wife posted them on Instagram/FB without thinking. Results: we got swarmed with egg orders from friends which we never intended, now we have more demand for eggs, we hardly have enough for our own.

Quote: While it's good to have customers, I would make sure to have a supply for myself too! That's one of the best parts of the reward of having laying hens (aside from all the other awesome stuff)!

Quote: I think I set mine too low. I have had my future orders listed at 3.50 a dozen, and I'm feeling (after seeing recent grocer prices) I might have underestimated cost. Now I feel a little stuck because I already promised that price to 2 people.

Yellow Leghorns? Not aware of Leghorns that are yellow. Generally, a bird with red earlobes will lay brown eggs and a bird with white earlobes will lay white eggs.

I wasn't really referring to the color of my chickens. When my stepdad bought them, from the local feed store, he says he thought the guy referred to the breed as a yellow leghorns. They are actually all white, except one that has a black feather. Someone on here told me that one was probably bred with something else. They gave me the name of it, but I can't remember. It was many comments back.

It's okay, just reevaluate you feed/beddings cost and other expenses you incurs monthly. If you are breaking even w/ your free eggs supply for your fam, that's great. If your making extra to pay for the coop expense even better. I charge family 3.00 for doz eggs and but end up paying more voluntarily since they know backyard eggs taste better and healthier. Right now they are paying average $65 for coop rent after feed expense which I thought I'll never get back when I build my coop.

Quote: Aside from initial cost of buying chicks/building the coop (which I wasn't counting, and that was costly) cost hasn't been bad. Right now it's a 50lb bag a month at 10-15$ and a bale of straw at 4$ (I have 10 pullets and 1 cockerel). I buy treats (fresh fruits and veggies) for them, and I've had to buy night crawlers, but I just count the extras in my own expenses as extras. I don't have to pay a fee since this property is owned (my son's father), and no fee for permits or anything since it's not in a town.
