Hello everyone on backyard chicken i have a question well here it is


OK So my parents said for my 13 b-day on November 27 i can get a sun conure but i read on them people say they are nice sweet loving and i wanted to ask the general public if they are nice to see who has bad ones to i know they are out there so i have some questions about them for you guys and gals to answer

*1 how nice are they do they bite hard
*2 are they messy and if they are how messy it is good to have a bird cage with wings like i do for the bird when i get one
*3 how easy are they to train and can they learn a lot
*4 just how good are they at talking i heard they can talk but not much i don't care if the bird never says a word in his/her life but how many words can they usually say could they say good morning Nana [it''s my nickname] and good night Nana
*5 are they good with others to i have a granny a mom and dad and 3 sisters 4 9 and 10 and one brother 5 and another brother on the way who is a 8 month old baby still in my mom i need them to be nice
*6 and last but not least how loud do they scream


and could i get pics of yours to it would be OK if not but i like pics

cheeky is the very rare slate masked lovebird boy and the rosy cheek peach face lovebird girl also anyone else have black lovebird like mine i have not seen any and i know they are rare so let me know

I've got one! Say hello to the aptly named Larrikin:

Lark is my baby boy - although he did turn 5 in August. The cage you have looks like it'll be nice for a sun conure. You just have to make sure you get a variety of different perches - maybe a rope one, a wood one, a stone perch, etc. Also get different diameter perches so all the muscles in the feet get used. It keeps the feet healthy. And you'll have to fill it with toys! Also, the bar spacing has to be correct. So let's go through the questions here:

1. They can be extremely nice, and they can be extremely mean. It's all in the bird's personality. If you get one from a breeder who handles the babies, I'd expect him/her to be nice. And if they want to, they can bite really hard. Lark came from a pet store, whose owners thought it was funny to chase him around with a towel until he flipped onto his back, which is a parrot's last defense. Needless to say, when I first got him he was terrified of people, and I lost a few chunks of finger while working with him. If you're asking if they can draw blood, oh yes, they can, and then some.

2. They're just as messy as any other breed of parrot. They'll fling food, they'll poop wherever unless you want to 'potty train' them (I taught Lark to fly back to his cage whenever he needs to poop) and they'll splash their bathwater everywhere - just like any other larger bird species. There are bunches of ways to contain the mess, and a cage with wings is a good start. Having them on a proper pelleted diet helps, as you won't get seed hulls everywhere.

3. They're very smart little birds and like to please, so if you know what you're doing and you stick with it, they're not hard to train. Lark does a few tricks himself. He was clicker trained.

4. They're not the best talkers. Their voices are pretty muffled and they don't talk as well as, say, cockatiels, but some can be pretty accomplished. Lark says a few things, like hi and puffball (his nickname), but he likes to mimic sounds more. He blows his nose, gives kisses, whistles, laughs, and does a bunch of other sounds.

5. This is all dependent on the bird's personality. All birds are different. Sun conures do tend to be pretty outgoing, but others are shy. Lark is mostly a one person bird due to his early life experiences. He does like my mom, though, and is okay with my father. He's neutral about my brother. In general he likes women more. Like I said, all depends on the bird. Socializing at an early age helps, though.

6. Loud, loud, loud, loud, LOUD. They are the loudest conures, hands down. If one screams right in your ear, forget about it. Your ear will ring for at least half an hour. Keeping them busy with lots of toys and things to do keeps them quiet, though. Lark only screams when I just arrive home to get my attention. It's his contact call. The rest of the time, though, he's pretty quiet and likes to use his human noises to communicate to me.

They're little snuggle bugs. Lark likes nothing more than to curl up under my chin. They can be very comical and mischievous. But like with every parrot species they have their pros and cons. If you're looking for a snuggly, sweet, smart bird and can put up with the noise level, go ahead and get one. Otherwise, get a cockatiel. They can be just as sweet and are much quieter in general. They're also much less expensive and they can't bite as hard if they get annoyed

Thanks so much i know that they are loud i actually got that cage for my lovebirds but the bar spacing was an inch and they got out and chewed up all the edges of my wood furniture [which everything in my room is wood] and they pooped out the wood they ate on the rest of the wood i owned so i moved them to a small cage and now i have a big one i plan on getting a conure i used to have a rooster and h was pretty loud he passed due to old age being a 7 year old rooster so i plan for loud and some biting my lovebird cheeky can be pretty mean at some times which i got him from a bird mill where the person smacked him around and he did not like people anymore he is nice and will climb up on my shoulder but if i try to pick him up he gets really scared but he is doing a lot better

Wow, you're lucky. I wanted a GC Conure for my birthday because we didn't have enough money for much else. I wanted one, but my second option was the even less expensive cockatiel. That's what I had to end up getting, and even then, my mom complained about the price. (And we had to get a free cage that was missing a lot of things and blah)

Anyways, I got bitten by a Jenday conure at the bird store (It was hand-fed), and it left a small scar, as did a GC/black capped hybrid once. They ARE pretty loud, but NOT the loudest conure I've seen-There was a rarer species that I forgot what it was, but it was LOUD, A lot louder than the Sun Cs. So they can bite hard if they want to, and they're pretty loud. They can talk, but not as well as some other parrots.

As for your lovebird, the color is pretty rare, though I've seen it a couple times before.

We have a green cheek Conure (Marley) and a Congo African Grey (Maya)

1. Marley is a "second hand bird" (we didn't get him from the breeder).. When we got him he was about 6 months old. The girl we got him from said "he" (we have not had him sexed) hated men but loved women.. we found the opposite to be true. He loves my husband and will "nibble" on him.. but rarely bites him very hard.. he hates me with a passion and will bite the blood out of me every chance he gets. I feed him more than my husband does.. plus I am the one who cleans his cage.. but he doesn't care.. lol

2. Maya and Marley are about equally messy. I don't have the skirts on Maya's cage anymore since he never really knocks much out of his cage. I suppose we are lucky.. but the only real mess they make outside of their cages is when they decide to throw food at the dogs.. and the cage skirts never caught any of that anyway

3. Marley has learned quite a bit but I think he learned most of it from Maya.. he will allow my husband to hold him upside down and will roll over for belly rubs. Marley was always the toy addict.. where Maya hates toys and prefers watching TV and bugging the other animals.

4. Maya says a lot more than Marley.. last time my husband counted maya is up to over 500 words and phrases. Marley is learning.. but he can't enunciate as well as Maya can.. so his speaking is more like mumbling... even though you can understand him, he's just not as clear as Maya is. Both birds know what they are saying and use their words and phrases properly. For instance when one of our dogs starts guarding her food dish Maya will tell her "Sayya, SHARE IT!".. and Marley will say "Sayyadina bad dog".. no one taught either of them the words.. they just picked them up on their own (but I have heard Mayya correct Marley by saying "Marley, say it right")

5. Each bird is an individual.. you may end up with a one person bird like Marley is.. or a bird that likes everyone once he gets to know them

6. Even though Maya and Marley can both be loud on occasion.. Maya has learned that screaming is not appreciated. Marley is learning that screaming is bad (even Maya will tell him "Marley, that's enough" when he gets started). Neither bird was ever as loud as my neighbor's Sulphur Crested Cockatoo..

1.) They can be nice or mean. I believe that some animals can't be trained to like certain people. I know of lots of dogs that only like women, or only men. As for your soon-to-be parrot, it probably won't like the little ones. If I were you, I would keep a VERY watchful eye with the bird around the tots.
2.) That question shouldn't even be asked. Ha ha. ALL birds are messy. I know my 2 birds are super messy, and my friends single budgie loves throwing stuff all over his floor. Birds are that way I guess (By Nature.)
3.) I have never heard of a conure being hard to train, but it also depends on the birds past. If it was handled by humans, it would probably accept you a lot sooner than a bird that wasn't. And it's age also depends on how well you could train it. If you get a 3-5 year old conure, that someone dumped on you, because they were going to college,,,, I wouldn't expect the bird to jump on to you and cuddle. That bird would need some serious work.
4.) Conures aren't really the talkers of the parrot family. They mimic sounds, and can do lots of noises, but have a very limited vocabulary.
5.) I wouldn't expect this bird to be good with the little ones. As for your parents, it will probably choose to be nice to one or the other. Some birds can be really picky about the gender of people they like.
6.) Conures will blow your ears off. I have 2 quaker parrots, and I thought they were loud. Conures are ridiculously loud. I would prefer the loud squawking of a Macaw over the screeching of a conure.

Well that's good about my cheeky bird being rare i hope they have babies soon they should be laid and hatched by spring time so to spring i wait

but with the conure noise does not matter we all wake up early [around 6AM or so] so the conure noise would not bother me or anyone else around here accept my 2 lovebirds they squawk a little in the morning and i say good morning and they both morning Nana and night night Nana good speaking for them only those 2 things but lovebirds rarely talk so it makes me happy it took me 9 months to get cheeky as tame as he is he was from a bird mill hence his extremely rare color and he was MEAN i lost some good chunks of my finger in the process of it all but i worked at it for 9 months now cheeky is very sweet loves me and peachy i read the news paper with my grandma everyday and they sit there and look at it like they think hey are reading they probably say

Cheeky says 'peachy look at that picture of the car there is a bunch of jangled up letter looking things we poop on everyday do you know what they are?'

Peachy says 'no i don't honey but it looks interesting aah if i only finished high school and did not get sold mm waffles'

i give them bits of whole grain waffles and stuff from health food stores like veggies and mango they like it and they are well treated members of my family just like my chickens are i cannot have roosters here but i like all my hennies

Cheeky after i washed him mirror chest side and ashed back side he says i need my little pink wash cloth you use to dry me off i have 2 of those one is mine and the other is peachy and cheeky's dry off towel

Well good news September 10 around 5 o clcok or so i am getting a pair of sun conures boy and girl im very happy


here is apic of them at trhe house they live at i do not have them yet but in evening tomorrow i will so owner sent me this of them

Oh, yes they are gorgeous. I volunteered at a pet store that had sun conures. They are sweet, tame, and noisy, and very messy. I liked Sunshine, the name of the conure that I worked around alot. Congrats on your success with getting a conure; are your lovebirds noisy? I really want a lovebird and my parents HATE lovebirds becuz they are "noisy". =/
