Always real. Never artificial.

All the Christmas trees around here are farmed so any that are cut down are replaced. Tree farms are usually great places for wildlife too like deer and rabbits.

I can't imagine having an artificial tree!

Always real; DH used to work for a Christmas Tree farm.

Picked ours up today; you have no idea what kids will argue about when getting a tree. Who picked it out, who cut it down, who helped carry it, who walked the farthest...... Tomorrow it will be who put the lights on, who put the ornaments on, who decided where to put the tree......

We had a good laugh about it; drank the hot chocolate and went on our merry way.

We are getting our very first real tree. Ever since Hubby and I been married (DS was born only months after), we had the same 4 ft tree my mom gave us. This year, we finally decided it's time to get a real tree. We are going out in the woods and cutting one down ourself. We are NOT getting a BIG one because of Lily being 18 months old and loves to grab at things. Me and a friend went out the other day and found a perfect size one that we can put up out of reach of baby hands. we are not going to cut it down, instead we are going to dig it out and put it in a pot. When Xmas is over, we are going to replant it.

As far as digging a tree up.... If you could see a tree roots an all, the middle of the tree is at the ground level. Roots are as wide an as tall as the part of the tree you can see. People that sell balled trees ether grow them in big pots or do a proses called root pruning to restrict the root ball size. If you just go dig up a wild tree an cut the roots to fit in a pot it will live threw Christmas but odds are it will be dead by next winter no matter how good you replant it.

Edited to add:
Everyone using real trees be careful an keep it watered. Also do not put them in a room you would need to go threw to get out of your house. When a tree catches fire it can bring a room to "flash over" stage before many people can get out. Flash over is the point that everything in the room achieves spontaneously combustion.

I've never heard of balled trees. I'm going to have to see if there are any near us. Our five acre future homesite doesn't have any trees on it. It would be kind of neat to start planting some pines on it.

Real in the family portion of the house, fake in my bedroom. We always have to have a real one, nothing beats the smell of a real tree. I dont want to spend $20+ on a tree, so I keep a fake one in my bedroom. That way, my mom can decorate hers all fancy like and I can do what I want with mine. I hang out childhood ornaments on mine. It may be tacky, but each one has its own little story.
