Who has had an egg explode?

What causes them to explode? Age? I have several eggs that I took out from under a hen that has killed 3 chicks as they hatched. I have stuck them in an incubator and don't really know the age of them.

I've been feeling under one of our Muscovy hens and stuck my hand right into a rotten egg........gross. Pulled some suspect ones out, stepped back, stepped on them and almost barfed at the smell. I also had some duck eggs in the bator of unknown age. Had a feeling they were too old. I was holding one up to my ear to see if I could hear anything and the only thing I heard was a hissing noise. I barely got it out of the house before it exploded! Just SOOOOO nasty.
