Who has welsummers?

I think I would like to move in the direction of welsummers... I like dark brown eggs and I would like to keep a chicken that is endangered. And I want them to be according to breed standards, if I'm going to keep an endangered breed I want it to be a good quality bird. Also, I think the welsummers are beautiful, exactly what a backyard chicken should look like (IMO!).

So I would love to hear from anyone who keeps them, I'd love more information than the regurgitated wikipedia info that seems to be on every web page I can find. Are they good egg layers, even in winter? Are they calm or flighty (i've read both)? are they a good dual-purpose breed? Good chickens for a 4 year old who's obsessed with them? Any personal info that you have from your own experiences would be great! Thank you!

I have one Welsummer who just started laying last week. So far she's been a great backyard chicken. She's fairly calm without being comatose, and is relatively smart. Her eggs are teeny still, but she's been laying consistently every other day for over a week now. That's a little low compared to my other, earlier new layers, but it IS February.

Below is a pic of some of her eggs, next to my BO hen's.

Hello, I have 5 hens and just love the dark eggs. That started laying in December and now the eggs are large to extra large. Not flighty one is very friendly. I am thinking about getting some more. I have them with a BCM roo. So I do want to hatch off some chicks in the spring.

I love my Welsummer!

They are OK layers.

As soon as she started laying she was quite calm and I can pick her up and hold her easily.

Don't know about dual purpose b/c I'm keeping her as a pet, but she's not a skinny bird (altho she took a long time to mature).

Not sure about the 4 yr old gig. Depends on the bird; depends on the kid.

My welsummers (breeder quality) are good layers (average 5/week) of nice sized eggs. As with any breed, they molt in the fall, so no eggs during that time. I'm still waiting for most of mine to start back up. (1 girl is laying)

I don't have any hatchery wellies, but from what I understand, they can be flighty.

They are curious and friendly, but not lap chickens. My rooster a fantastic protector of my hens. He is easy on the hens backs, courts them as a good rooster should.

Ok I am new and trying to learn about showing my chickens this year. With the Welsummer's, is there usually a egg class and a chicken class? What exactly do you do to prepare for a chicken show? Is there a regional listing that anyone knows of for South West Missouri? Thank you. Tink

Our Welsummer is our loudest and friendliest. She lays large eggs about 3 a week and just started. She is my 8 years old favorite and falls asleep in her lap. She was a breeder chick.
