Who Is At Day 18 or 21 Today on Their Hatch??

Glad to know this is normal. Thought I would have to go to a chicken rehab or something. And of course, I brought my largest egg ever to work today, It is sitting on my desk. Shame no one else brought bacon.

Actually, I'm going to have to stay a work next week because I'm hatching at school with my class. Just candled for the second time. Things are looking good with 7 out of 22, with 4 that I just can't tell, and 1 that has cracked and has filled the room with such a pleasant smell. You should see it. 17 kids holding their noses, the windows wide open, writing in their hatching journals with big grins on their faces.

It's day 20 or 21, I didn't map it out like I usually do. I'm feeling rather pessimistic! 2 out of 7 silkie eggs left after last candling. Good think I threw in a few of my cohin eggs, in case 1 silkie egg hatches and there is a lonely chick. My daughter told me she heard peeping but I haven't yet. Luckily I have a lot to do today so I can't hover.

I'm going to try to swear off hatching til Spring. And I'm going to try to take my advice, get the eggs from somebody close by!

Oh, no, Mark! How on earth did it crack? Yuk!

You did remove that icky thing, right? Hope it doesn't compromise the hatch. Do you think it got cracked in shipping and was so small you just didn't see it? That's a first for me. Never had that happen before, thank goodness. Phew!

***Today is Day 20, starting at 2 p.m. for the lone baby in the hatcher. I candled the other five in the Hova that are on Day 13 and they seem to be growing just fine. They're due Oct 13.

I have 4 so far and another one pipping. The first one to hatch is still fraile. I've taken the first 2 out and put in bator and giving them vitamins and eletrylkes.

I'm on day 15 with my marans and silkies.

I can't ask for a day off but I can take the babies with me to work, which the kids LOVES.

I was off yesterday due to a flare up with my Fibro and a dad had volunteered in my class yesterday. So today he sent me a "chicken book" SO I will have to read it to my classes now.

At least something's happening with yours, Jackie! My little Char-baby is still sitting there, making me wait and we're several hours into Day 20. I expected at least a pip tonight. Well, tonight isn't over yet.

I'm pretty sure it was cracked by someone who came to visit while I was out of the room one evening over the weekend. I think curiosity got the best of this person, because when I came back, he was all jittery about something. Now that I"m putting 2 and 2 together, I can see what might have happened. He just had to see what they looked like outside of the incubator. He's a very kind hearted person, who helps out around the school, but just isn't all there.

Trust me, it could be worse. About 10 years ago I had a student "Help" me after school by deciding to feed my salt water aquarium (that literal cost me about $2000 dollars to set up) with an entire jar of fish food. It created so much ammonia in the water every thing died, coral, fish, shrip, crabs, seas stars, everything. I just couldn't redo that again.

Anyway, if things continue to go as planned, and I get the 7, and the four I couldn't read turn out to be viable, that's 11 chicks. 50% from a still air incubator isn't bad. Now, the next question is, how many roosters? That's more than a few weeks away.

Ah, I bet that's what happened then. I was wondering how you'd keep all those curious people's hands off the bator/eggs while at school.
I was hoping you'd have more than that hatch, but there's always the unknown factor, i.e, the P.O. Then the bator operation itself. Even though I know the eggs are fertile and even though I think I pack them well, there's always the chain of things that can go wrong with shipped eggs. I still want everyone who hatches my eggs to get at least 50%. Maybe the ones you can't tell about are growing fine and you'll have 11 babies hatch. AND, I'm crossing my fingers for a pullet-heavy ratio for you!

So far I have 4 wheaton and 3 cerele pendence hatched.

I was candling my others that were at day 16 and I noticed one of them had a crack in it. It ended up being one of the pendence that I forgot to put in the hatching bator. I stuck it over in the hatching bator and it hatched not too long afterwards.

I have one other that is pipping and I don't know about the other eggs. Tomorrow will be day 23.

Anything going on Cyn?
