Local store that gets chicks from hatcheries. For some reason this particular store gets at least one rare breed in per shipment...enough so that I was able to cancel a hatchery order that was supposed to arrive next week! The price works out similar to what I would have paid + shipping from the hatchery but I don't have the shipping losses to deal with.

good idea:) I like the personal touch w hatcheries (I never trust our mail w them) and of course the vaccination option as well but there are limits to availability there too. What's the deal with Cochins? I don't know much about them other than plenty of ya'll here love them. Thx.

You are so right. I would much rather have gotten my rare breeds from the feed store, but the only one I trust around here don't carry them. I had to deal w 7 losses out of 16 that were shipped to me. Let me tell you, it wasn't fun.
mamatink7, I have 1 adult Cochin mix hen who is by far the tamest and most laid back bird I've ever raised. She's like s dog. Now I have 2 Cochin chicks who seem to have the same personality. I like them for their beauty and easy management. If you are looking for a lot of eggs, this isn't the breed for you. Mine is also the lowest in the pecking order. If you want a good broody, they are great for that purpose. Some say the leg feathers get too dirty, but I don't have this problem so far. It's very easy to fall in love with this breed.

I like my cochin chicks because they're funny little birds that look like they're wearing feathered trousers. I got them and the silkies to do my brooding for me (in addition to garden bug patrol). I didn't really know how to tell chicks apart at the time, so I just picked out all the chicks in the bantam mix that had feathered legs. Ended up with a few Mille fleurs, but otherwise got a lot of different colors of cochins. Straight run, so there are definitely more roos than I need, but given their general temperaments and adorableness, it probably won't be that difficult to rehome them.
