I am in ND, usually takes 2-3 days for my chicks to get here. PO usually calls me between 11 PM and 2 AM to say that my chicks are in, and I am at their back door within 45 minutes (PO is about 20 miles away). I would call the PO and tell them that you are expecting chicks and tell them to call on arrival and hold them there for pick-up. Had a substitute driver a few years ago, I had ordered poults and they were already late. I was going crazy! PO never called, the driver didn't either (regular driver calls if PO workers didn't). The box was clearly marked 'call on arrival' and had my phone number listed, but the woman drove around with the poor little poults in her car all day (it was a hot day, too). She finally got here around 4 PM and told me that she 'didn't know if the lady getting these knew how hard it was on the birds to ship them'. I explained as nicely as possible that it isn't as hard on them if the PO CALLS like it says to on the box. I opened the box with her still there and 7 out of 20 were already dead. Hope she learned from it... Now I always call the PO and emphasize that they need to call me.
