PBJ, I cannot sex them until they are about a week old or so. The boys become light gray and the girls are darker. Also, Marans combs develop very quickly in the cockerels, so after a few weeks, if the feather color doesn't show you, the combs will. Finally, they have dots on their heads (like BRs). Often the pullets have smaller, more defined white spots, with the cockerels having larger, less defined spots. I love Marans for the early sexing properties. I just like to know whether to knit pink or blue booties as soon as possible.
Yay Hippichick! I love sizzles!
Mrs. Lewis Rich, what kind of Marans?
The1much. What the heck IS the1much???????????? Have you ever shared what the heck that means?
Kellie, yay for you, but I have a confession (I think showgirls are funny looking) Please don't be hurt,
I know so many people love them!!!!!!!!! Good luck! You can leave them in if everything seems fine. I have to admit I usually take mine out when they are dry, as they knock into all the eggs and seem to start panting, getting too hot. If you think your temp and humidity is pretty stable. Snatch them quickly and get them to the brooder, but wait until they are mostly dry. JMHO. I am sure others will have different views.
PICS PLEASE EVERYONE!
