Who is pipping and waiting right now??

Oh that's great Heather. I'm so happy you gave it the extra time. That's a huge fear on my part that I will give up before the chick does. That's why I don't alway's trust what I see when I candle, Unless it look's like the chick is jumping around on a trampalene or something.

lol Well you certainly can't name that one speedy. I just took another look and I have 3 all the way out and one is halfway out but it's resting with it's wing's spread across two other egg's. One of the one's that hadn't shown a pip or anything has pipped so that just leave's one egg with no activity. This egg is in the corner and I can't see the whole egg so maybe it's pipped and I can't see it yet. The one egg I was worried about earlier with the whole in it and no activity is still alive. There's another egg that's about half way zipped so it want be long now. When you were talking about the chick's coming while you were gone reminded me of the other night. It was around 3:00am and I found a chick pretty close to coming out so I went and got my jazz video recorder and I was going to record the hatch for my sister's MIL. She hadn't ever seen anything like that before. The posistion of the egg in the carton was right under the window, so I held a flashlight with one hand and the recorder with the other and started filming. About two minute's into filming my camera informed me my memory card was full. I'm like what!!!!! Before I could fix that problem the chick was out. Go figure. Oh well I had fun trying to get it on film and I now know it can be done with a flashlight. How are your baby chick's doing now???? I will have mine free ranging tomorrow in there little enclosure of course. I alway's bring my newborn's out to spend the day with me while I work in my yard so I can watch them closely. Keep us posted.

He/she is chirping loud and being really active today. My dog keeps going over the the counter where the 'brooder' box is (amazing what a small space you can use and how little clean up needs to be done when there's only one). She sits on the floor and stares up at the box.

I'm not sure if she's just curious, or thinks the little thing would be tasty. She has a pretty big heart, so I'm hoping it's the former. I've already started training her that the baby is off limits to her, so I'm hoping there won't be any problems.

My cats have pretty much ignored the chirping. They are only interested if the chick is running--I'm sure they think it's too easy if you don't have to chase something, and even if you do, it's probably not work the effort. lol Don't worry, he's safe where he's at. I need to do some weeding, maybe I'll take him for a little field trip.

I'll definitely be putting him within visible range of my other cochins and silkies when they arrive, but he'll be so much bigger than they are, it'll be a while before I can put them together, I'm sure.

I candled again and the other eggs have definitely not developed further, so I'm going to go ahead and sanitize and set it up for the ducks. We're going to have to do something different before spring, though, because the dang bator is so hard to keep regulated. My LG will be stable for 18 or 20 hours, then it inches up in temp, so I adjusted it down minutely and the next thing I know it's dropped four or five degrees. Argghh!

Heather did you take your baby on the field trip today? I took my 2 day old's and up out for there free range in there enclosure's today and wore there butt's out. They will sleep through the night tonight. If I don't let them wear themselve's out they will be up before my rooster's. lol Cheep cheep cheep cheep which mean's get up and fix our breakfast. 7 out of the 10 egg's due today are out and there are 2 still pipped. I know one of those is O K because I saw movement going on. The other pip I couldn't tell but I have a good feeling about it. The one egg with nothing yet may very well turn out to be nothing. I sure hope not anyway. I got a huge scare today. When I went to check on my hatcher I opened the door to the room I have it in. I also have some frizzle's that were born on the 6th and some barred rock's that were born on the 7th in a pen in that room. I don't trust my dog's so it's better to be safe than sorry. Anyway as soon as I opened the door my heart dropped. There appeared to be the tiniest frizzle dead. When I got closer I saw the little fizzle's eye's flutter. These bird's were in a large bird cage and somehow the frizzle had it's neck going out through the bar's and than back in through the bar's again and it's head was stuck. I don't know how this little bird even got up high enough to where it's head was stuck. Anyway very slowly and carefully I worked it's head out and freed it. It's little heart was beating so fast I thought I still might lose it. I held it up against my heart trying to get the little fellow to calm down while my old man covered the area with hardware cloth. Finally it seemed to calm some so I put it on the floor and the bird went to scratching feed they had knocked out of there cage. Whew that was a close one. That would of been a horrible thing to happen on such a glorous day. I watched the little fellow all day and all is good. I think the event has brought us closer because it seemed to me it payed more attension to me than it had been before but I guess a near death experience and the person that save's you would bring you closer together. So here I am, still up and waiting. Why don't you PM me sometime, I enjoyed our chat and we do have, you know chick's the same age.

I'm just ending day 21 with no pips, no peeps, I candled 2 days ago, had movement in some eggs for sure, some eggs are very dark and I only have flashlight, no bad events in last several days...did have early mishap, definately lost some about day 3 but these have been growing and definately chick with movement. I have some other today at day 19 candled as took off turner last night...no pips or peeps either...the mishap was temp too low for about 4 hours, lid not on tight. temp was always 85 or better...yes that was when I added eggs, fortunately I checked on it quickly.

3 Sister's Farm, I wouldn't panic yet. Some egg's come late. It depend's on the temp's. As far as the low temp's for the four hour's I think it will be O K. That just slowed the development down. This summer I had 2 full time free range hen's killed by a predator during the night and they were both setting and the next day when I found the cold egg's I put them in the bator and most hatched. I'd hold off a couple of day's before I panic.

Ok everyone. I'm not pipping right now but I thought this would be a great place to post that I've borrowed a Sportsman 500 and set 39 eggs last Monday including- Speckled Sussex, Black Orp over White Orp, Black Orp over Speckled Sussex, and Buff Orps. Then this morning I set a grab bag of Orpington eggs from Bama Chicken along with more Black Orp over White Orp and Speckled Sussex, Speckled Sussex, and Buff Orps. Wish me luck- I have 74 eggs total in there right now!
