Who is with me?

WWD is right here going silently nuts trying to figure out if any of the nearly impossible to candle marans eggs will hatch. Or if the broken one will.

And some of the shipped silkie/sizzle/showgirl eggs are going

So I've been lurking mostly because I have a thousand chores right now and building a turkey grow out enclosure because (OMG) I hatched a lot of turkeys.

And I want an enclosure on that hill I fenced in anyway. It'll be 10 x 16 x 10ft tall when I'm done. That'll hold some of the buggers and give them access to a very safe place to forage all day it's about 100ft x 200 ft of regrowing woods, grass, roses, blackberry and meadow grass - oh and kudzu - uck.

So busy busy.

Luck to you all for peafuzzies and guineas.

At least the hubbs is at home today so he can check on eggs.

I so wish it wasn't so darn hot! I want silkies and there's no way in hell I'm gonna order eggs. Maybe I'll be able to find some local silkie eggs.... hmmm... yeah....

Chickiemama, I just hatched a silkie and I am so hoping it is a hen, since my silkie hen went AOL.

If you do not have any pip in your peafowl eggs when you get home, take one egg out at a time and look for movement. It is so close, your should see a bit of movement in the air sac.

I so hope you get a couple babies,at least one.

I have chicks hatching left and right. I am tryig to get an order of 50 filled for a guy that called me. So far, I think I have 20 for him, maybe 25.

Good luck to everyone, I have to run. Meeting my Mom for a so needed drink, that is an alcohol drink. We go out once a month, use to be twice, but shoot happens.

I checked all the eggs in the hatcher when I got home.

No movements in anything. No peababies and no guinea babies for me!

I thought I was going to shut the bator off after the turklettes hatch, but looks like I will be trying guineas one more time!

Hello All! I realized, as I candled my eggs for the last time just last night, that I hadn't received any emails to let me know of new posts in a while. I am not sure if I accidentally deleted one or not, but... 8 pages of posts later, I am all caught up!! Whew!! Between backyard Jurassic Park stories and backwards babies, I am exhausted! lol

Today is day 18 for me. I need to go look up humidity levels for this stage and get them up there, but we are done rolling. We candled last night and really couldn't see much. We saw movement in a few, up by the air sac, but my newbie eye really wasn't even sure what to be looking for. I hope more are viable than just what I saw for certain. One egg had an air sac that actually ran along the side of the egg, as well as where it was supposed to be. That one had the most distinct movement in it!

Cassey, how did your hatch turn out?

CM, I am sorry about the your eggs.

CB, I hope you enjoyed that drink!! From what I remember reading, it sounded like you deserved it! lol

Sadly enough, I realized that there is a really good chance that I will not be here to see my first hatch!! We have so much going on this weekend and will be running in and out so often, that the chances are slim. My 14 year-old will be here and will get to see it, but has been warned of broken appendages if I even get the inclination that he touched the bator. He will text me and let me know of the status. I think that they should all hatch a day early, just so I have a better chance of witnessing something!! Saturday is just a carnival during the day and fireworks at night, so I can find time to hang out and watch for something! lol

Anyhow, good luck to all and I look forward to now keeping up, instead of catching up!!

Good to see you back Riq! Teach you to lag behind.

I was just out letting the Jurassic Dozen out for the morning and chuckling, several are still persistant Lap Sauropods which I find endearing. And the older dedicated lap babies are teaching the younger and less hand reared crew to trust me and today a few of the eight week olds tried out the lap for a fit - it should FIT it's big enough, sigh.

OMG one of the little bunch and just ONE is a Tom, well McCarran the Great Pyr pup was out with me - he didn't think she should be near the horde so he tucked in his homely little head, threw out his chest and STRUTTED at her. If she was even slightly inclined - he'd make a couple of good sized bites for breakfast. Cracked me up.

We create Jurassic Station this weekend to give the Jurassic Dozen some grow out room. A five foot high frame topped with four cattle panels arched to allow for a very high ceiling. We'll tarp over the top add a high perch the length of it and "voila" Jurassic Station. One end will be more insulated and enclosed to allow for a couple goats/sheep to help do kudzu/grass battle.

It will eventually be replaced by a permanent structure but they need interim digs and the hill pen is good sized and yet safe for growing turkey puppies.

You know that anything can go wrong will go wrong idea??? I went to check my bator temps last night to see - 127 on the maintainence shelf? And 103.4 in the wiggler??? Gulp - what the??? I've never had a water heater thermostat freak before so I changed all the batteries - nope still reading hot.... Start looking at the bator, omg the fans aren't going - hell of a time for both to break down... (*&^

Well, some *&%&^%&^$ Dog had stepped on the power strip and unplugged the fans.... I got them started again and spent three hours babysitting the darn thing to make sure it went back to normal.

I'm pretty sure the eggs on the lowest shelf were fine. They probably never went over 101. And I candled one lighter marans egg this morning - a precious wheaten and it's alive so maybe... they were on the shelf with the wiggler - gulp. Thank God it did happen in a bigger bator, much taller than my last so the hot air had some place to GO when the fans quit.

Gulp Here's hoping I didnt lose too many.

Well, it's just one of those weeks, STOMP is now residing in the incubator... I went out to check on the broody turkey with eggs. Only to see a shattered/bloody/crumpled egg in one corner. It happens, particularly with turkeys with chicken eggs. I was sort of sad, they'd been quite close to hatching. I went to fish it out to throw it away and looked at it to see how far along it really was, whether I was right on the estimate. It moved....

I removed the bloody last 1/3 of shell that hadn't been crushed and trampled away - figuring that ship had sailed... and dunked him, whole lower half in flour, wrapped him in a hanky and stuffed him in the bator.

By golly following a second flour treatment - maybe he should be KFC but that's too common... he's still breathing.

If he makes it he will be one heck of a clean up project - if he can move at all - plaster butt. He's got a long road with a torn yolk sac and bloodloss but he's obviously a fighter. He's breathing a little better now.

I keep expecting to look in to see he's gone...
fl.gif

A flour treatment? How do you guys know to do this stuff?! I never, in a million years, would have thought of that!! Boy, I am telling ya...with everything that I am reading, these hatches just don't sound like fun anymore!! lol

LOL flour and cornstarch and spiderweb (eww all you want it works) all stop bleeding. That's long term livestock and country work talking. Heck my dad used fine clay dirt. Yes, dirt. And yes it works and no they didn't infect. Nothing more dangerous than tools slipping in a bloody hand. You rubbed dirt on it, let it dry and went on. I grew up that way. Germ paranoid I'm not.

So Stomp may just make it. He's even beginning to shift and kick some.
