Who is with me?

WOOHOO! My guinea eggs shipped today! She sent 16 of them! I get to turn the incubator back on!!

I have two shipments of eggs in the bator, they were 10 faverolles and 15 brahma (gold/black laced, don't know what you call them).

They were put in late night 30th, so on day 10 now. It's my first time ever hatching chicks.
In addition to that, they also waited too long to be set, more than two weeks.

Today I have cleaned out the dead ones. Two brahma and four faverolles never got anywhere. A few more never veined (filled out though) and a couple are blood eggs. The remaning 14 (9 brahma, 5 faverolles) are alive and well, very active.

Temp and humidity is stable, no trouble.

The fact that I have 14 very live eggs is just fantastic, all things considering. Hope they all make it!

Is it a Maran?

If it is not making much noise you had best be prepared to open that pip hole so the little one can get air, especially after being up to 130. More than likely shrink wrapped at that temp. I know at 110 I had A LOT that were shrink wrapped and had to help the whole bunch.

Day of pip - open to get them air
Day 2 - peel off a little egg wet and pray

But you know all this, did you know about the praying part.

After that some got out on their own, but the rest either died or I got out and even then some did not make it. Besides my own eggs, out of 2 dozen shipped I have 2 shipped chicks and maybe 10 to 12 of my own that survived.

By now, you all know my incubator at that time was fairly empty.

I am not addicted, I am not addict and I will not put any more eggs in the incubator until next year.

Welcome to the staggered hatchings section. We are not crazy.

So nice to meet you and you can post anything you want here, a picture of your incubator, chickens, dogs, horses, even kids. You can say we are nuts, although we will not agree, or as we feel, you can just believe everyone else (besides us) are nuts.

I will be the first to admit, my husband thinks I have lost my mind, but actually it is only him, because I know I am sane.

So can I ask;
Why did the eggs sit for 2 weeks before going into the incubator?

Yes, they are. They came from Texas and North Carolina. Three of the eggs from North Carolina (out of 12) were broken. Of the remaining nine I only have two in the incubator and they aren't doing anything yet. The three that have hatched are all Ameracaunas. There are three Marans that have pipped.

I hate to think how much per chick these guys are going to end up being!

I'm just feeling good right now that I have three healthy ones so far.

One made it! Even one is a victory after that disaster! He's cuddling up to a beanie polar bear right now about dried off. The rest didn't make it, most died the day of the inferno.

I'll try again in Fall.

Don't stop now WWD..... the insanity has just begun!!!!! The real challenge is can you hatch eggs during this dreadful heat?!? Come on.... Spend about $60 on SHIPPED eggs (without an ice pack), let them sit out for a week and then try to hatch them.

Hmmmm....... that should be a reality show!

So, as of this morning I have ten chicks, but I think there are two that won't make it. At three in the morning, I helped four who were shrinkwrapped, according to CB's instructions. It's two of those that while breathing and moving a little, may not have enough energy to keep up the fight.

WWD - that is amazing about your heat struck victim surviving!

135 degree temp spike should kill everything! You may be on the road to developing a special breed for hot climates - or when global warming gets the better of us all.

I am puzzled about how to do better next time avoiding shrinkwrapping. I was so careful watching the temp and kept it between 99.5 and 100.5 the whole 21 days. My humidity during incubation averaged about 40% and during hatch I cranked it up to 65 - 70%. Any suggestions for what I should do next time?

I have eggs to transfer to the hatching bator tomorrow. They have been incubating in a 1588 that regulates the temperature itself. Their humidity has been a little higher during incubation. I'll be interested to see if I have fewer shrinkwrapped ones with that lot. These are also shipped eggs.

Fortunately, I have six under a broody hen that I will candle today. They are mutts (Silver Laced Wyandotte cock and barred rock hens), but I bet they are full of "hybrid vigor."

Well, Faith is outside under a broody (Puddle) that just hatched her first chick ever this morning (third try- the Ditz) she was more than happy to take the little Ortling in. So now he has a momma and one sibling and off he goes. I'd have brooded the lot to tame them but since he was an only I thought it kinder to give him a Momma and sibs.
