Who is with me?

I hate dentist and I know I need to go for a check up after 5+ years, but just that thought gives me shakes and makes me nervous. The thought of the drill in my mouth or someone poking around with a sharp object is just not that enjoyable. But the husband is going to retire soon and I had best get it done while the insurance is there. Gosh, I just pray there is nothing that needs to be done but a cleaning. Truthfully, I hope that does not need to be done either.

If it weren't for the occassional tooth ache I swear the whole dental thing is one ongoing SCAM.

The first time I EVER have to pick up a stick to save me from a bird, that bird's name is gonna be FLOG and I'll be the WINNER of that game.

Then you take the stick, you pin his head to the ground, step on the stick and you grab and pull them legs. Now if you're ticked enough the head comes off and there is a bit of a mess but it takes the fight right out of them.

Then a nice hot batch and Flog is back to being Soup...

I forgot to say, Mommy took on the 3 babies I gave her and hatched out 4 more, leaving the nest. I figured I would go and remove the remaining eggs due to them being rotten. Well there was 6 eggs in the nest, 4 being rotten and 2 having little beaks sticking out. At first I thought they had died in the eggs and that was why she left them. Upon tapping on the one, there was movement, so I checked the other and movement.

They are now safe and sound in the incubator and I figure I will give them to her tomorrow morning after they hatch. At least I will see how they do with her.

I just never imagined her leaving to peeping babies in the nest, but I guess she figured 7 was enough.

That she takes on these 2 stragglers and saves me from doing it. Next is getting the coop built before winter and getting everyone in there to make it easier when it comes to processing them.

I will get a picture later, just hope the little ones make it until I do.

I yanked four eggs from Puddle this morning, two were stepped on, one living, one dead, another intact but deceased.

Goes to show you mother nature isn't perfect either. The stepped on one is pipped and wrapped and sitting with the silkie/sizzle eggs.

Faith and Prodigy (her only self-hatched egg LOL) are doing fine with momma and she still has one egg I left with her unmolested to see how it goes.

At least she has her pair and is clucking happily - finally - after the third try.

Welcome to the staggered hatchings section. We are not crazy.

So nice to meet you and you can post anything you want here, a picture of your incubator, chickens, dogs, horses, even kids. You can say we are nuts, although we will not agree, or as we feel, you can just believe everyone else (besides us) are nuts.

I will be the first to admit, my husband thinks I have lost my mind, but actually it is only him, because I know I am sane.

So can I ask;
Why did the eggs sit for 2 weeks before going into the incubator?

Well, I already am a bit crazy, so that's ok.

They sat for too long because the bator that I am borrowing was late. It was supposed to ready a week earlier than it actually was.

Well, fuss, this broody's crushed egg is a bit of a problem. So much of the outer shell is busted the outer membrane has collapsed all over the inner membrane and I can't find the buggers nose and the aircell was completely crushed down. Every time I fiddle with the outer layer I run the chance of ripping the inner layer which is still veined but I know the outer layer collapsing is causing it problems. I think I may have got it a breathing hole now - if I knew where the nose was I'd be happier...

Nature makes MORE puzzles than we do I swear.

ETA: Found a nose and he's breathing! So off we go with a tad less urgency...

WWD, I hope that things are going well for your crushed egg! I look forward to seeing the post that says he made it out okay!

I have a question for you guys about chicks and brooders. At this time, I have about 40 eggs on the way to me. I can handle that in my incubator and I can handle that in my coop, but my brooder is where I start to run into a problem. My brooder is just big enough, in my opinion, for about 10 chicks. I never expected to be handling this large of a load and that is even with a bad hatch rate. Is there any reason why, if I have the lighting and such out there, that the coop cannot work as a brooder as well. I mean, other then them not being in the house where I can obsessively check on them, what is the difference, as long as they are kept at the correct temperatures?

I am just trying not to end up with 3 or 4 brooders spread out throughout the house. It will be hard to handle when day care kids have access to just about every room, except the bedrooms!

Any thoughts?

Well, he's making it slowly. Finding the nose was fairly key. I went out to run errands and came home to find him twisted a bit sideways and less of it exposed but better in general humidity wise (stuffed his butt in a sleeping bag of press n seal before I left). Pulled him out, tugged a bit at the inner layer and managed to free up more of his head. He's moving a bit more often and more strongly. Loaded him back into his sleeping bag and put him back. He might just make it.

Brooding 40 I've always set up to do outside. One of those huge melon boxes inside a large baby pool and a light. Made some screen panels out of spare screen and lath wood. Voila brooder outside. 40 can get to be a bit much VERY quickly. Luck with them...
